🐾 Wednesday Win: New Beginnings, New Responsibilities & A Forever Home 🐾

This week's belongs to two very special members of the Croft family – Jane Christine Bain and Hunter.

Many people know Jane as the driving force behind our accessible market garden, but what they may not realise is just how much she has contributed to Redberth Croft over the past year. Starting as a volunteer, Jane quickly became one of the key people helping shape our future, stepping into the role of Project Lead and Grower for our accessible market garden. Alongside rallying volunteers, supporting site development and working closely with our Clever Carpentry team, Jane has played a huge role in turning ideas into reality. Jane also regularly volunteers at other PAVS members - esteam and local business Underwood Organic Farm.

At the same time, another story was quietly unfolding. Back in October 2025, we were asked to help a wonderful Labrador called Hunter whose family were facing housing difficulties and needed to find him a new home.

Hunter certainly made an impression when he arrived. Within his first week he enjoyed an emergency midnight trip to Doggy A&E after sampling some of the less desirable farm delicacies, and it quickly became apparent he possessed the skills of an MI6 operative. Dishwashers, pedal bins, push-to-open bins, cupboards... nothing was safe. Somehow, he managed all of this during the night without waking our founder, despite her reputation for being an exceptionally light sleeper!

When Jane first mentioned she was considering taking on a dog, our honest assessment was that Hunter might simply be too boisterous. Fortunately, Jane didn't get the memo.

Through patience, consistency and a huge amount of hard work, Jane built an incredible bond with Hunter. Today he is thriving in his forever home and, with support from SPOTT, they are now working towards Hunter becoming Jane's assistance dog. Jane has even overcome communication barriers by training him using whistle commands.

We couldn't be prouder of them both. The best part? We still get to see Hunter regularly. He visits the Croft every week and comes back to stay whenever Jane is away. One of the advantages of adopting from the Croft family is that our animals always have a familiar place to return to, rather than facing time in kennels.

Hunter follows in the pawprints of Woody, our first canine success story, who was rehomed in 2023 and continues to enjoy life as a much-loved family companion in his twilight years.

Whilst we are not a formal rescue centre, we do occasionally support animals who need a fresh start. We deliberately focus on finding the right home rather than meeting rehoming targets, allowing us to truly get to know each animal and match them with the right person when the time is right.

As Hunter begins his next chapter, it also means there is now space for another large dog to experience and become part of our extended family.

If you know of a canine companion who could benefit from a fresh start, we'd love to hear from you. We don't mind a few quirks, personality traits or behavioural challenges provided we're given an honest picture from the outset.

🐴🪣 Teamwork really does make the dream work at Redberth Croft! 🪣🐴

Even our four-legged Croft Crew like to muck in when there's a job to be done... although we're not entirely convinced Norton understands the difference between helping and supervising! 😆

Here he is lending a hoof to Shannon Clayton as she tackles the never-ending bucket washing duties. It might seem like a small task, but it's these everyday jobs that help keep the farm running and, more importantly, give people the opportunity to feel useful, valued and part of something bigger than themselves.

At Redberth Croft, we believe purpose isn't found in grand gestures. It's often found in the simple things – caring for animals, supporting one another, learning new skills and knowing that your contribution matters.

Whether you're on two legs or four, everyone has a role to play here. ❤️

Today’s mission: Operation Ragwort Removal. 🦺🌿

A massive thank you to our incredible team who spent the day tackling one of those essential but far-from-glamorous farm jobs – clearing ragwort from some of the less-maintained paddocks that have come into our care.

Now, anyone who knows our founder Daisy will know that this isn’t just a job… it’sDaisy Duke Colemanonal. 😆 According to her long-suffering parents, since the age of four she’s been loudly shouting “BOOOO!” at every ragwort plant spotted from the car window. Some children waved at cows; Daisy declared war on weeds.

While ragwort’s bright yellow flowers might look cheerful, don’t be fooled. Behind that sunny appearance lurks one of the farming world’s most unwelcome guests. Ragwort contains toxins that can cause severe and irreversible liver damage in horses, ponies, cattle and other grazing animals, particularly when it finds its way into hay or dried forage where animals can’t avoid it.

Removing ragwort isn’t just good practice—it’s part of our responsibility as land managers. Under the Weeds Act 1959, landowners and occupiers have a duty to prevent the spread of injurious weeds, including common ragwort, where it poses a threat to agriculture and animal welfare.

So today wasn’t just about pulling weeds. It was about protecting livestock, improving pasture quality, caring for the land, and ensuring these paddocks are safe and productive for years to come.

It was hot, it was hard work, and there was a lot of bending involved (we may all be walking like we’ve aged 30 years by tomorrow), but thanks to the determination, teamwork and sheer grit of our volunteers, a huge amount of ragwort has now been safely removed. 🎉

Every plant pulled is a small victory. Every volunteer hour given makes a difference. And every person who turns up to help keeps Redberth Croft moving forward.

Thank you all for another fantastic day. The ragwort may have put up a fight, but the Croft team won this round. ❤️🌱

A lovely evening with the Croft crew down on the beach last night! 🌊🐴

Our youngest member, Amélie, enjoyed her very first beach gallop aboard our veteran Retraining of Racehorses star, Ozzy. Alongside them, our Farm Manager,Sam Barton, took Olly for his first-ever trip to the beach – and what an experience! We’re so blessed to live here & have such amazing beaches on our doorstep.

Watching our horses continue their retraining journeys while creating special memories like these is exactly what Redberth Croft is all about.

While we don’t offer riding lessons ourselves, we’re always happy to recommend excellent riding schools and instructors across Pembrokeshire for those looking to gain experience.

We’re also exploring supported loan opportunities for experienced riders and those returning to riding, helping to make horse ownership and partnership more accessible. We currently have a range of horses at different stages of retraining, suitable for a variety of abilities and goals.

🐾 How much is that doggy in the window? 🐾

Meet Luna. The former street mutt from the UAE who somehow managed to rack up a travel and healthcare bill that would make most people wince.

✈️ Etihad A380 flight from the UAE.
🏥 Two-week stay at Langford Vets.
❤️ Two open-heart surgeries.
🐕 Mixed breed. No pedigree papers. No fancy bloodline.

Worth every penny? Absolutely.

Because at Redberth Croft, we don’t see animals as livestock, projects, or possessions. They are family.

Every animal that arrives here has a story. Some have been neglected, abandoned, misunderstood, or simply never given the chance they deserved. We invest in them because they matter. Not because it’s financially sensible, but because every life has value.

Luna’s journey could have ended very differently. Instead, thanks to the support of our community, veterinary teams, volunteers, and everyone who believes that all animals & people deserve a chance, she’s now living her best life; claiming prime spots on the sofa, supervising daily activities, and reminding us all who’s really in charge.

People often ask how much running a place like this costs. The honest answer? More than we can ever put a price on.

Because the return isn’t measured in pounds and pence. It’s measured in wagging tails, second chances, and the quiet moments when a dog who once had nothing finally knows they are safe, loved, and home.

❤️ From “just a dog” to priceless.

We gave the market a miss today as we weren’t entirely convinced by the ever-predictable Welsh weather! 🌦️

Instead, yesterday turned into another productive afternoon clearing, cutting and splitting logs at the croft. 🪵💪

Meanwhile, Lady Duke the dog-sheep has made it abundantly clear that she’s far too much of a princess to sleep on the grass. Instead, she carefully crafted herself a luxury bed from the pile of wood shavings left behind! 👑🐶

Hard work all round… although some of us clearly have different definitions of “work.” 😄

🌿🚜 Wow....What An Incredible Community Chip In Day! 🚜🌿

A huge thank you to the fantastic volunteer team from Pembrokeshire County Council who joined us today at Redberth Croft CIC and got stuck into a very productive 'Community Chip In Day', our first organised team building activity.

Together, we processed seasoned timber and brash from ash dieback trees, alongside cuttings generated through our hedgerow restoration and conservation projects. Much of this material originated from our Branching Out project, supported by South Hook LNG, and our Hedging Your Vets project, supported by the Port of Milford Haven through PAVS; the very first projects we delivered when we began this journey less than two years ago.

Nothing goes to waste here. The woodchip produced today will be reused throughout our community market garden, helping improve soil health, suppress weeds and retain moisture. We also have surplus woodchip available to members of the public, with donations helping support the ongoing work of our volunteer-led community farm.

A special mention must go to one of our newest team members, Ben Brown, who is returning to farming after spending many years building a highly respected career as a professional chef. It has been fantastic to welcome him and his daughter Maisie Brown to the farm. Maisie is currently exploring a future career in agriculture through her studies at Greenhill School, and it's wonderful to see the next generation developing an interest in the land-based sector.

We would also like to thank A1 Servicing & Tool Hire, Narberth once again for ensuring we had the right equipment for the job and helping make the day a success.

As many people don't realise, Redberth Croft is run entirely by volunteers. Our leadership and management team are volunteers too, balancing the organisation alongside work, family commitments and everyday life. Without the support of our wider community, corporate volunteers and partners, we simply couldn't continue delivering the work we do; particularly the care and support we provide for our animals and the vulnerable people who benefit from spending time with them.

To everyone who chipped in today: thank you! Days like this remind us what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose. ❤️

Today was one of those moments that reminds us exactly why we started this journey. 💚

We were incredibly proud to welcome The Codi Trust to Redberth Croft today and to watch our members and project leads speak so openly, confidently, and passionately about the work happening here. Seeing people stand in front of the camera and share their stories, their projects, and their growth was genuinely emotional.

At Redberth Croft, we believe in a strengths-based approach — creating space where lived experience becomes a powerful platform for growth, purpose, and connection. Watching individuals discover their confidence, recognise their own value, and step into their “super powers” is something we never take for granted.

What makes this even more special is that this community has been built by people who believed in us, backed us, and saw the potential in what we were trying to create long before it became visible to others. Because of that support, we are now in the incredible position of having a volunteer waiting list and are formalising our referral pathways so we can continue to grow sustainably and support even more people.

To our team, our members, our supporters, and every single person who has walked alongside us — thank you. The commitment, kindness, resilience, and courage shown here every day is extraordinary.

We are so honoured to be building this together. 🌱

An awesome day at the Sheep Spa yesterday with some of our brilliant DOIT team members! 🐑💅

Everyone got properly stuck in helping with foot bathing and hoof trimming for our beloved Valais Blacknose Sheep — and the sheep were definitely feeling better after their deluxe pedicure treatment! 😂

We absolutely love seeing our community evolve into something so much more than just experiences and pony petting. Here at Redberth Croft, people get the chance to be truly hands-on with agricultural activities, animal care, and life on the farm; building confidence, learning new skills, and becoming part of the family.

There was even a suggestion that next time we paint their hooves… now, we do treat our animals like family, but that might be a step too far! 🤣
