Aviva Camino Walk. 16-20th September, 2026.

Here's an exciting fundraiser set up by Richard McLaren whose wife suffers from cluster headaches:

"Some of you may remember that for the past few years myself and my Aviva colleagues have walked different sections of the Spanish Camino Walks. This year
we will be walking a section of the Camino Norte, from Bilbao to Santander, which is 125km over 5 days, 16-20 September. Various charities have benefitted from our walk and your kindness over the past few years, but the primary driver has always been a personal connection to one of us doing the walk, or the wider Aviva Community in Maxim/Glasgow and beyond through our wider colleague group or suppliers we work closely with. This year, I have proposed OUCH UK as the Charity to benefit for the most personal of reasons. My wife, Claire, has suffered from this condition since the summer of 2014. and has had to make many adjustments to her family, work and social life as a result. When the attacks β€˜peak’ it is truly frightening to watch, and to be honest, I have no real understanding of what she has to go through. At the moment, there is, sadly, no cure, but OUCH UK are striving to find one via funded research, as well as providing advice, support and practical help to those who suffer from this debilitating condition, who are roughly equal in number to the amount of multiple sclerosis sufferers in the UK. Many Thanks for your Donation."

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

When we talk about mental health and su***de prevention, we must also talk about severe, intractable chronic pain and the devastating reality of Cluster Headache.

Known in medicine as one of the most painful conditions a human can experience, cluster headaches are frequently referred to as "su***de headaches". That name is not an exaggeration: surveys and clinical studies show that over 50% of people living with cluster headaches report experiencing suicidal thoughts.

The mental health impact goes far beyond the acute attacks:

The agony of attacks: Strikes arrive at terrifying speed, often multiple times a day or night, causing searing, unilateral head pain that leaves patients pacing, screaming, and desperate for any relief.

The "shadow": Between attacks, patients live under intense dread of the next cycle, leading to chronic anxiety, anticipatory trauma, and sleep deprivation.

Isolation and misdiagnosis: Patients often wait years for an accurate diagnosis, frequently having their pain dismissed as "just a migraine" or "a bad sinus issue."

Treatment barriers: Lifesaving acute abortives like high-flow oxygen can be difficult to get prescribed or funded, leaving patients stranded without relief.

Physical pain and mental health are inextricably linked. For Cluster Headache Warriors, suicidal ideation is often not about wanting to end life it is about an overwhelming need to end unbearable, untreated agony.

How can you help:

Listen and believe people living with severe pain disorders.

Advocate for better access to oxygen therapy and cluster-specific abortives.

Check in on friends or family members living through an active cycle.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available:

UK: Call 111 (NHS) or 116 123 (Samaritans)

RACHEL JONES CYCLING 250 miles for OUCH (UK).

"I'm cycling 250 miles to raise money for OUCH (UK) (Organisation for the Understanding of Cluster Headache), a charity supporting people living with one of the most painful conditions known to man. After years of being misdiagnosed, I finally received the correct diagnosis in 2026. This challenge represents the miles I travelled while living with unbearable daily pain, and I'm doing it to help raise awareness, improve understanding, and make sure fewer people have to fight this condition alone. Every donation, no matter how small, will help make a difference. Rachel Jones."

JOE WALTON'S MANCHESTER HALF MARATHON

This October, I’m taking on my very first half marathon, the Manchester Half, to raise crucial funds for OUCH (Organization for Understanding Cluster Headaches). Having lived with cluster headaches for 20 years before getting an official diagnosis, I know firsthand how vital OUCH’s support and guidance are for those affected by this condition.

Read more in the link and donate if you can, however little. Thank you!

PETE'S HALF MARATHON 13TH SEPTEMBER 2026.

Pete Howson will be running the Vrnwy Half Marathon to raise awareness about Cluster Headaches. In Pete's own words:

"Please donate anything you can to help OUCH UK help more people like me! But only if you can afford it. Cluster headaches are considered the most painful medical condition. Patients rate it as significantly more painful than childbirth, kidney stones, gunshot wounds, and bone fractures. Standard painkillers don't help. 20 years ago, I was in a terrible place with my headaches. But I found OUCH UK and they probably saved my life. They connected me with the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery. There's no cure yet, but thanks to OUCH UK, I'm still alive and managing better! If you can afford it, please help OUCH UK make everyone suffering with cluster headaches better!"

If you are able to donate to Pete's event:
