A Better Tomorrow CIC

A Better Tomorrow CIC A Better Tomorrow is a Community Interest Company which provides supported housing for adults in reco We now have 7 houses and 28 clients!

A Better Tomorrow is a Community Interest Company; we are a residential abstinent recovery project that houses men who have decided to make a change having struggled with alcohol and or other drug addiction. We celebrated our 2nd birthday on 11th August 2016, it started with one house and one client. All this has been achieved without any external funding and through the hard work of our founders,

staff and volunteers. We have come a long way in 2 years, we have seen 90+ clients come and go, with only a handful of those not re-joining us following an unfortunate relapse. We now have a small office at Park Lane Centre in Woodside, Telford. We have developed our website and database, utilising the past life skills of our staff, all of who have come through their own recovery. We now work alongside several organisations such as Telford and Wrekin Council, Local drug and alcohol authorities, other recovery services, probation, police and prison services. Our aim to better our client’s lives, not only while with us, but more importantly, when they re-join society and move on. Definition of a Community Interest Company (CIC)…
“Designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for the public good’

This is what A Better Tomorrow is all about... We invest out time and dedication to our clients, which in turn will benefit the local communities by having our clients integrate back into the community in a positive way, through volunteering and eventually employment

We currently rent via private landlords, 4 bedroom properties which we fully furnish, including the internet and a computer, this means that we can literately take in clients who own nothing except the clothes on their backs. Our aim is to open 10 houses in Telford, this would enable us to help an additional 12 adult men with their recovery from alcohol and or other drug addiction. We also promote any skills the clients may have and are willing to teach other clients, we are looking to put future funds towards renting a kitchen and purchase supplies at Park Lane Centre to start a cooking project, where one of our clients will teach the others how to cook, we would also like to rent a space where we can start an art project, also run by one of the clients. In addition, we would like to start a fishing project and purchase all the tackle and licences required. We also play football once a week, and have been invited to play in other Recovery leagues around the midlands, some of the funds would go towards purchasing a kit and cover transport costs. Ideally in the future, we would like to be able to purchase a couple of minibuses to be able to transport the clients to the projects and days out that we would like to be able to do more of. As well as day to day support for each of the client’s 356 days a year, we actively encourage volunteering in local business and charities and help the clients get back into education through courses run by Telford and Wrekin Council’s Job Junction and have good links with the local college, Telford College of Arts & Technology (TCAT). Our clients can stay with us for up to 2 years, this means that we are heavily helping to reduce the short and long term impact on the ambulance services, NHS, police and prison services by greatly reducing crime, reducing the number of overdoses caused by addiction and benefiting the community when our clients volunteer locally therefore giving back to society.

Woodside CIC up for award

A Telford community interest company has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award for its work in supporting people in their very darkest days.

The community organisation, A Better Tomorrow, which provides help for people with addiction, substance misuse, mental health issues and homelessness, has been shortlisted for the Community Inspiration Awards 2024 in recognition of its work.

The community interest company, which is based in Woodside, Telford, is one of just eight organisations and individuals shortlisted for an award in the public services category.

The five finalists will be selected by the judges after a public vote through the Community Services Award website. Voting closes on June 28.

A Better Tomorrow’s chief operating officer, Martin Cantrill, said that the nomination was a huge honour.

“We have been working quietly over the last ten years to help people who are often in their very darkest days with nowhere to turn. We do it because we have been in that position ourselves and know personally how easy it can be to give up hope.

“We do not look for any special recognition for doing what we do, so to be shortlisted for a community inspiration award is really very special to us,” he said.

The Community Inspiration Awards are organised by the Community Foundation to recognise outstanding contributions made by public and voluntary sector organisations, businesses and members of the community, whose efforts have made a positive difference in the community and have inspired and motivated others.

The Public Services Award specifically recognises the outstanding contribution made by an individual or organisation in going the extra mile to respond to the needs of the community.

The finalists and winners will be announced at a ceremony on September 20 in Birmingham.

A Better Tomorrow was set up in 2014 to give support to people with addiction and substance misuse. It now provides accommodation and services to support over 700 clients and works closely with Telford & Wrekin Council.

It expanded in 2017 to support people with mental health needs through its Wellbeing Houses. In 2021 A Better Tomorrow set up an early intervention project to help people who had become homeless.

The CIC now has places for almost 100 clients within its abstinence, wellbeing and early intervention programmes. It also provides outreach support working in partnership to run a ‘calm café’, detox service and wraparound care.
