Coalport History #4 🕰️
Coalport was once home to one of Britain's earliest purpose-built war memorial footbridges.
The elegant suspension Memorial Bridge was opened in 1922, funded entirely by public subscription, to commemorate the men of Coalport and nearby Jackfield who died in the First World War. Rather than being just a monument, it was designed as a practical crossing over the River Severn that local people used every day; a living memorial.
When the original structure became unsafe in the 1990s, local support helped ensure it was restored and reopened in 2000 rather than demolished.
