Barry Sheene & the Yamaha TZ750: The Rebel Legend of Motorcycle Racing

Few riders in motorcycle racing history possessed the charisma, talent, and star power of Barry Sheene. More than a World Champion, Sheene became a cultural icon, transforming Grand Prix motorcycle racing into a mainstream spectacle during the 1970s and 1980s.

This iconic image captures the British legend aboard the fearsome Akai Yamaha TZ750, instantly recognizable by his famous number 7 and the unmistakable Donald Duck graphic that became synonymous with his racing career.

🏍️🇬🇧

By 1980, Sheene had already established himself as one of the biggest names in world motorsport. A two-time 500cc World Champion (1976 and 1977), he was known for his fearless riding style, sharp wit, and larger-than-life personality.

After a successful period with Suzuki, Sheene made headlines by switching to Yamaha for the 1980 season. Although his Grand Prix campaign proved challenging, the move produced some unforgettable moments aboard Yamaha's legendary two-stroke machinery.

🔥

The motorcycle featured is the mighty Yamaha TZ750, a machine often described as one of the most terrifying racing motorcycles ever built.

Powered by a brutal liquid-cooled two-stroke four-cylinder engine, the TZ750 delivered explosive acceleration and incredible top-end performance.

Yamaha TZ750 Specifications

⚙️ Engine: 747cc Liquid-Cooled Inline Four Two-Stroke
⚙️ Power: Approximately 140 HP
⚙️ Weight: Around 155 kg
⚙️ Top Speed: Over 170 mph (275 km/h)
⚙️ Transmission: 6-Speed Racing Gearbox
⚙️ Chassis: Lightweight Racing Frame

With no traction control, anti-wheelie systems, or electronic rider aids, controlling the TZ750 required exceptional talent and bravery.

Fortunately, Barry Sheene possessed both.

💨

One of the most distinctive features of the image is Sheene's legendary helmet design. The cartoon Donald Duck graphic became one of the most recognizable symbols in motorsport, reflecting his playful personality and unique approach to racing.

While many riders focused solely on results, Sheene connected with fans in a way few racers ever have. He was outspoken, entertaining, and unapologetically himself.

That authenticity helped make him Britain's first true motorcycle racing superstar.

❤️

Beyond the championships and victories, Barry Sheene changed the image of motorcycle racing forever.

He brought glamour.

He attracted new fans.

He inspired future generations of riders.

Even decades after his final race, his influence remains visible throughout the sport.

🏆

Whether riding a Suzuki RG500 or unleashing the raw power of the Yamaha TZ750, Barry Sheene raced with a style and personality that made him unforgettable.

A champion.

A showman.

A racing icon.

Barry Sheene wasn't just one of the greatest riders of his era—he became one of the greatest personalities in motorsport history.

It was Great for Linda and I to place our Classic Race Bike, and our 1989 Suzuki Super carry Van on The Helipad, alongside The New Airbus H145 (D3 model) Midlands Air Ambulance Helicopter, with The Pilot and Paramedics, Crew, on Friday 8th May 2026.

I funded and built the 1962 Royal Enfield 250cc Super Five Classic Race Bike last year, to display at classic bike shows and events, to raise extra funds for The Air Ambulance.

I have given the bike a nod to My Road Racing Hero Barry Sheene.

I placed his Iconic Number 7 and Donald Duck Stickers on the faring, and a decal of Barry Sheene's Signature on the seat.

Barry Sheene's Team Mate Steve Parrish, and Seven Times World Superbike Champion Carl Foggaty, have also both very kindly hand signed their Signatures on the seat too.

The bike has received lots of donations and great comments, and has been a huge success.

The 1962 Royal Enfield Super Five 250cc model, was the first production Bike on sale at that time in the UK, with five gears.

The yellow Suzuki Supercarry Van has been in our family for 35 years, and it used to belong to my late Father in law Sidney Stanford, who sadly passed away in 2009.

I completely restored the van in 2016 and it always attracts lots of attention and great comments, and even offers to buy it at shows.

A Super Huge Thank You to Everyone who has Supported Our Fundraising over the last four years, which has enabled us to raise nearly £29,000 for The Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

Thank You

Very Best Wishes

The 2-Second Rule for Motorcyclists.

The 2-second rule is a fundamental element of advanced riding, drawn from Roadcraft: The Police Rider's Handbook and reinforced through SAPAR advanced rider training.
For motorcyclists, it’s not just about keeping distance—it’s about creating time, space, and options to anticipate and deal with hazards safely.
What is the 2-Second Rule?
Maintain a minimum 2-second time gap/ following position, from the vehicle in front, in dry conditions.
Unlike a fixed distance, a time gap adjusts automatically with speed, making it far more effective.
Police Roadcraft places strong emphasis on observation, anticipation, and space. On a motorcycle, this becomes even more important because:
Braking requires balance and grip management
You rely on forward vision. Road
Hazards affect you more (diesel, gravel, potholes)
A correct time gap gives you:
Thinking time – to assess developing hazards.
Reaction time – to respond smoothly, space – to brake, steer, or avoid.
At the heart of this rule is a key Roadcraft concept:
“Always be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear on your own side of the road.”
How to Apply the Rule.
Pick a fixed reference point (signs, trees, a gateway, shadows etc)
When the vehicle ahead passes it, start counting:
“Only a fool breaks the two-second rule”
You should reach the same point after the count finishes
Advanced riders increase it based on risk, and Conditions.
Dry roads, clear view
2+ seconds
Wet roads
At least 4 seconds
Poor surfaces (diesel, gravel, mud, water, ice)
Increase significantly
Following large vehicles
Increase for visibility
The 2-second rule is a foundation skill of advanced riding.
Use it properly and you will:
Ride more smoothly
Improve hazard perception.
Advanced Riders Plan Ahead.
OAP.
(Observe, anticipate, plan.)
TUG.
(Take, Use, Give information.)
