We do have on street parking & theres a car park behind us & a smaller one near the lifeboat station The Teignmouth Sea Angling Society was formed in 1922 by a group of angling enthusiasts whose activities centred on and around the Teign Estuary. It was primarily a boat angling club and not long after its formation it established a headquarters by purchasing a wooden hut on the back beach from a M
r Bobby Frost for the princely sum of £24. As with many such organisations, our extensive trophy list record the History as little is known of the activities at that time other than those passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation but as with most clubs, activities were put on hold during World War 2 to be restarted soon after the end of the war. Our records from 1955 are complete and they record the first rebuilding of the Hut in 1965 with a purpose built wooden hut, designed and built by members under the guidance of local builder and member Bill Tribble. This lasted nearly forty years, and was replaced in 2003 by the present two storey steel building, assembled and built under the guidance of another builder member Kevin Tapper. This is a valuable asset, as are the four mooring trots which can accommodate 12 boats on the Back Beach adjacent to the Headquarters; there is also a designated separate storage facility for those who use the moorings. The Society is run by a committee of the members elected each year and a list of the TSAS team appears elsewhere on the website. The committee meets each month, the AGM is in December and its financial and competition year runs from 1st December to 30th November each year. It is affiliated to the Angling Trust and enjoys the benefits of representation, £5 Million Liability Insurance cover and national award schemes. The TSAS Officers represent the Society both on the Angling Trust Wyvern Region Committee and the AT National Marine Committee. Traditionally its activities have always been within the river and the bay and are varied but member’s area of operation has considerably widened over the years as the inshore fish stocks and therefore the catches have become depleted, members now travel far and wide in the South West to fish the various hot spots. However one thing has not changed, the River Teign has always been a noted Flounder venue, the current shore caught British Rod-caught Record came from the river and several longstanding Competitions are held each year which at their heyday in the seventies attracted 400 plus competitors. Because of this the TSAS committee with considerable forethought 12 years ago launched the first 2 day National Flounder Festival for both boat and shore anglers. Sponsorship was secured from a National Supermarket chain who were building a new store in the town and other more local sponsors, with the result that first prizes of £1000 for both boat and shore sections were fished for. Great detailed planning by the then committee under Nigel Drew, Andy Carlson and the late David Cockram, backed by many members and committee ensured its success from the start and entries of 500 plus were recorded. In recent years the Festival has been limited to the shore section, but entries of over 300 are still received for the Festival in November of each year. It also runs regular competitions and events from boat and shore and it has been the practise to organise deep sea charter boat trips for those who particularly follow that type of angling. As with all organisations, the Society to prevent it from becoming insular and to remain healthy, it is always in need of new members to replace those who have either moved away or sadly passed away and these bring new ideas. The TSAS is no exception and benefits from new blood, therefore if you carry out your sea angling in the South West and in particular in the Teignmouth area we would welcome you as members. The membership level remains constant at about 100 and is a reasonable cost which is listed elsewhere on this site, along with a Membership Form.
