Paddle safer course on the beach in front of us this morning. Tony who was running the course asked if we could respond to a CH65 call from him on the beach as part of the course, obviously not a problem, pleased to assist Tony. Approximately 20 participants took part in the exercise all learning valuable tips on how to stay safe when on paddle boards and kayaks. These courses save lives.

Volunteers Week 1st to 7th June 2026

"Celebrating Millions Who Give Back"

Its the last day of Volunteers week so we have just managed to get in on the final day with a story from one of our Watch Keepers and Trainers, Pam, below she tells us why she became a volunteer Watch Keeper!

I joined the NCI in 2007 after reading a three line entry in the local paper asking for volunteers. There were just 25 watchkeepers at the time. My reason for joining was that my son had completed the Fastnet Race safely in 2005 and the sea going and safety services made sure this happened. I wanted to make sure every other son achieved their wishes safely at sea. I knew nothing about sailing but with now nearly 19 years experience with NCI I have learnt so much and hopefully, over those years, as a trainer, I have passed that on to others. I've loved every minute.

We now have around 60 Watch Keepers volunteering to keep our 'Eyes Along the Coast', 7 days a week, 365 days a year during daylight hours, looking out for the safety of all our coastal users.

Hi Everyone

Thank you if you have dropped some books to us....but, we still need more for our big sale next Saturday, please drop off any good paperback you have to our Lookout, Eastcliff, Teignmouth they will help to fund our Lookout to keep watch, 'Eyes Along The Coast'!

Also, don't forget to pop in next Saturday between 11-3pm when we are having our Big Book, Cake and Jigsaw sale, all funds raised go to the upkeep of our Lookout. Look forward to seeing lots of you there, be early and bag yourself a lovely slice of home made cake, a good book or two and maybe even a jigsaw, we have lots of those to choose from! We will also have some homemade fudge, a small selection of gifts and hand made greetings cards!

Slightly off topic but hopefully of interest. My wife and I visited Killerton House NT property yesterday as it was her birthday treat, yes I’m like that, no expense spared 😂.

Anyway, we found a book in their library showing places in Devon and came across this page. The top picture is obviously of the road over the railway bridge, if you look near the bottom on the left you can just see the original Coastguard Station, now replaced by our new NCI watchtower. The other picture is of course Teignmouth from Shaldon.

These pictures were not dated so my question is, can anyone date them please? Thank you.
