CSC Quiz Night 2026 Report
An evening of trivia, chips, and questionable knowledge
On Friday 25th April, CSC hosted its annual Quiz Night at Chalgrave Memorial Hall, and once again it proved to be a roaring success. Tickets sold out in advance, with more than 80 people packing into the hall for an evening of laughter, friendly rivalry, and the occasional correct answer.
Proceedings began with quizmaster John Parker making his now traditional grand entrance in the famous gold lamé jacket, clearly borrowed from someone much slimmer. This year he raised the bar even further with a matching gold hat, a look best described as 'Las Vegas meets village hall'.
To help level the playing field, bonus points were once again awarded based on team size. Smaller teams received a helpful head start, while the largest teams began with minus points and a mild sense of injustice. Twelve creatively named teams battled through six quiz rounds, two table rounds, and a brand new 'Beat the Clock' challenge in pursuit of the coveted title of CSC Quiz Champions.
After the opening rounds covering Geography, Food & Drink, and Sport & Leisure, 'The Hair Bare Bunch' held a narrow lead over 'Who Dares Gins' and 'Talking Japanese'. Meanwhile, at the other end of the leaderboard, 'Signs of the Times' were propping up the table, with 'Quizzy Rascals' and 'Who Nose' nervously glancing over their shoulders.
Half-time brought welcome relief in the form of delicious fish and chips from The Codfather Chippy. Phil Parry, otherwise known as 'Worrier-in-Chief', could finally relax once the food arrived safely and was rapidly devoured by hungry quizzers. Teams also used the interval to complete the table rounds, 'Underground Anagrams' and 'Entertaining Emojis', before their answers were whisked away for marking.
The break also featured CSC's unique 'True or False' game. Contestants answered obscure questions by placing their hands either on their head for 'true' or on their bottom for 'false'. After several increasingly random questions, over 70 participants were reduced to just two finalists. The deciding question asked whether Andy Murray is older than his brother Jamie. Vicky Hydes correctly chose 'false' and won the £30 prize, which she very generously donated straight back to the Club.
Back to the quiz itself, and the Science & Nature round saw some expertly played jokers shake up the leaderboard. 'The Dirty Half Dozen' surged into first place, closely followed by 'Deceptively Dumb'.
Next came the brand new 'Beat the Clock' round. Teams had just 60 seconds to write down as many countries beginning with the letter B as possible, then stand up with their answer sheet before time ran out, or score nothing at all. What sounded simple quickly descended into panic as dramatic music blared and teams desperately tried to remember whether Belarus still counted. Impressively, every team beat the clock, with the 3 top scorers managing 11 countries out of a possible 17.
The evening concluded with rounds on Entertainment and the wonderfully risky 'Double or Nothing', where teams could either double their points or lose everything for a single wrong answer. Unsurprisingly, this caused several outbreaks of last-minute arguing.
While Simon added up the final scores, the raffle took place with ten prizes up for grabs. Ken Green had an especially memorable evening, repeatedly holding winning numbers, though unfortunately not always on the correct colour ticket.
Then came the final results.
After spending much of the night rooted to the bottom, 'Signs of the Times' mounted a dramatic late comeback to avoid the Wooden Spoon by a single point, leaving 'Who Nose' to claim that particular honour. Last year's wooden spoon winners, the appropriately named 'Wooden Spooners', staged an impressive recovery to finish 10th, prompting calls for a drugs test from suspicious onlookers.
'Talking Japanese' faded after a strong start and eventually finished 9th, despite fielding an impressive team of 11. Mid-table honours went to 'The Queens Head', 'Norfolk n Chance', 'Quizzy Rascals', and 'Master Debaters', with very little separating them.
'Deceptively Dumb' finished a highly respectable 4th, proving that youth and intelligence can sometimes overcome a complete lack of knowledge about anything before 1995. 'Who Dares Gins' narrowly secured 3rd place by half a point, while 'The Dirty Half Dozen' once again demonstrated their remarkable talent for finishing second.
That left 'The Hair Bare Bunch' as the 2026 CSC Quiz Champions, finishing an impressive 9.5 points clear at the top. Congratulations to Nev, Sharon, Emma, Gary, Louis, and Jon who generously donated their £100 prize money back to the Club.
A huge thank you goes to everyone who took part and helped make the evening such fun. Whether you came for the trivia, the banter, or simply the fish and chips, we hope you enjoyed yourselves and we look forward to seeing you again next year.
As well as the CSC Committee (John, Simon, Kev, Debbie, Millie, Phil, Paul, and Mike) special thanks go to everyone who helped on the night, including Fiona and Lesley on door duty, Su and Mandy for running the raffle, Libby for serving food, Roger for the photographs, and all those who stayed behind afterwards to help put away tables and chairs and tidy up the hall.
