Happy hedgehog (& badger) day! πŸ¦”

Hedgehog Day dates back to the ancient Romans. The idea was that when hedgehogs comes out of hibernation on the 2nd of February to a sunny day– and see their own shadows –they return to their burrows, and winter continues for another six weeks. ❄️

So - I'm pleased to announce after working out in this wind, cloud and cold - that according to hedgehog myth, Spring is coming! 🌱

Hedgehogs don't typically come out of hibernation until March or April, but they can come out as early as this. Usually in milder weather, mind! πŸ₯Ά

Either way, we can help our little friends when they do emerge by creating a hedgehog-friendly garden: Create log piles, leaf heaps, and leave an area of permanently long grass for shelter, and for their food to live. πŸ‚

Hedgehog populations have dropped in some areas up to 75% since 2000. Mostly due to habitat and food loss. You can do something about it. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

Learning leaf shapes is a helpful tool for identification. Yet, to nature, the most important characteristic of trees... is not thier name. πŸ‘€

The first question I want to know is - Is it native to the UK? πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Native trees have naturally evolved and existed here for many hundreds, or thousands of years. They're deeply integrated into local ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and providing food and habitat for native wildlife. They serve and aid vital functions specific to OUR environment, whereas non-native trees provide at least 50% less services to, and negatively impact the lives of native wildlife. And ours! 🐝

Non-native species often outcompete native plants for resources. Some, such as rhododendron, smother entire woodlands. Some species can offer short-term benefitsβ€”like rapid growth or aesthetic appealβ€” but they lead to reduced biodiversity, and ecosystem disservices such as soil degradation. They provide worse than no support to wildlife. Their long-term impacts are, sadly, inarguably, negative. πŸ‘Ž

In contrast, a single oak tree can support over 500 species of caterpillars alone, which are essential for things like bird and other predators' survival, for recycling nutrients and of course the existence of butterflies. πŸ¦‹πŸ¦

Oak trees support over 2,300 species altogether πŸ‘ πŸ‘‘!

If you're identifying leaves, or pondering planting anything in the future - ask yourself, and research the most important question - Is it native? πŸ€”

Here at NLL - We do things differently.

I've (Lee,πŸ‘‹) been a gardener in different capacities throughout most of my life. I've seen and practiced in how traditional gardeners and landscapers work, view gardens, and train. Learning all the popular Latin names, ripping up ivy, spraying lawns and generally working AGAINST nature. To control it, with limited success and detrimental effects on our shared environment.

In the last 8 years I've learned so much about our natural world, and through my experiences, through experimentation, through courses and in obsessively learning about it in my own time to master my craft - I have a new, and also very old, formula.

I am offering our services in two ways:

Physically - I and/or my team can help to manage and enhance your garden, land or even farm to increase their biodiversity, beauty, productivity and potential functions. While, also making less work for the future!

Intellectually - I offer consultation, planning, design and permaculture-inspired lessons.

Or both!

A forest, or garden isn’t simply a collection of trees and plants with fancy names, competing with each other as most in our society believe β€” it’s a complex community of interrelated species, where each layer of the ecosystem plays a different role and supports unique wildlife. Done right, every layer is buzzing with life. And to a degree with the right support, given enough time, it can manage itself.

Get in touch if you're fed up of fighting your garden.

One of the top reasons behind starting my business was mental health. The collective wellbeing of my clients, their visitors, passers-by - and me!

It is scientifically proven, and I can attest to it, that things like: getting your skin on the soil, hearing and seeing wildlife, getting a whiff of flowers and plants on the wind, and hearing running water are amazing medicines for your mood and health.

The majesty of a well-managed garden can be as much of a sanctuary, church or stadium as it can be an allotment, football pitch, dining space or dancefloor. Sometimes all at once!

Text or call 07984344187, message here or email me at [email protected] if you would like to explore what we can achieve in your own little slice of the natural world. πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘¨β€πŸ”¬πŸ§˜β€β™‚οΈβœŒοΈ

Hello and thank you to our new friends! It has been awesome the past couple of days getting to meet more people and be introduced to some spaces in our new local area.

It's been a challenge this year with uprooting, replanting ourselves, taking the time to adjust to our new environment - and bringing a new seedling into the world...

It's time to emerge from hibernation. Let's see you Devon.

P.S - I'm going to get better at Facebook, begrudgingly.
