Our popular Heritage Films night will be returning at our Film Festival, this time with a wider range of film about Wellington and its residents.
Four out of five of our films of the evening are pictured here. Let's go through the pictures clockwise:
1. 1950's Wellington
A compilation of silent footage that some may have already seen on Facebook a few months back, this reel is an excellent look back into Wellington in the 50's and many places are still recognisable like the pictured Cornhill.
2. Great Western Railway
As the building of Wellington Station hurtles ever closer, we are taking a look back in time to a 1936 promotional film by Great Western Railway that was produced to advertise the pleasures of travelling to the West Country by train.
3. Wellington in 1996
This film, among a number of other VHS tapes, was donated to Wellington Town Council by the late Richard Fox about one year ago. He said "I can't quite remember what is on all of these tapes but I know there will be something worth seeing.". Luckily for us all, this particular tape comprised of a short film made in 1996 to promote the town which included some amazing information and footage of Tonedale Mill. This film is narrated by Richard Fox and was filmed and produced by the late Terry Milton who was a Town Councillor for many years.
4. Brian Hulls
In the 1980s and โ90s Brian Hulls could often be seen around Wellington, dropping his daughters off at school or doing the family shopping. When not at home on the Blackdowns, Brian was a BBC News cameraman in some o the most dangerous warzones on earth. Film Festival Committee member Jonathan Nex was a BBC News video editor at the same time and had assembled some of the most striking footage into a moving short documentary.
Along with the above, we will also be showing an interview with the great-grandson of Jack Ackroyd, a Hollywood superstar that retired to Wellington after appearing in over 50 silent films with Stan Laurel. He will tell Jack's story with clips from some of his most successful films.
