The newest read for the month ahead has been selected and we have gone for …

🥁 The Ghostwriter by Julie Clark

The blurb

"I know what your dad did."

I set down my sandwich. "He wrote a book."

The boy, whose name I no longer remember, had shaken his head, eyes sparkling with glee to be the one to tell me. To shatter my childhood right there in the school cafeteria. "Your dad killed his brother and sister. Murdered them in their own home."

Ghostwriter Olivia Dumont has spent her entire professional life hiding the fact that she is the only child of legendary horror author Vincent Taylor, famous not only for his novels, but for being the prime suspect in the brutal slaying of his siblings.

On the brink of financial ruin, Olivia reluctantly agrees to ghostwrite her father's last book, not realising that she will be forced to reckon with the ghosts that live at the centre of her family. Because after fifty years of silence, Vincent Taylor is finally ready to talk. But is he ready to tell the truth?

We had the pleasure of meeting Juliette at our meetup last night. Here is a link to her book of poetry written to raise much needed funds for Alzheimer's disease charities.

The blurb

I am Juliette Trevett the author of a very different kind of poetry book it is in two sections in the first are the poems I wrote and in the second are the poems my dad wrote for me while he was alive.

I have dedicated this book to his memory he died of vascular dementia.

I have had a calling to write this book and to share it as a gift to the world, I intend to Donate any profit I make from this book to charities to further the research to fight Alzheimer’s.

I need this book to be a symbol of compassion and kindness in a world that is far too intent on hate, the world is losing more and more of its humanity to the machine.

My poems will bring you back to something beautiful, ethereal. My poems are expressed with sensitivity and love for our transient earth my poems are a mixture of the spiritual connection to nature, the animals, trees, flowers pain and loss.

This book was very emotional for me to write yet at the same time an amazing feeling, I wiped away the tears, pen in hand and carried on writing this unique book.

Once read the words shall never be forgotten, I give to you a message from wings of a butterfly of hope, change, love, and light.

But most of all peace on Earth.

The blurb,

All I wanted to do was live my life in peace. Maybe get a cat, expand my spice farm. Really anything that doesn't involve going on a quest where an orc might rip my face off. But they say the Goddess has favourites. If so, I'm clearly not one of them.

After saving the demon Fallon in a wine-drunk stupor, all he wanted to do was kill an evil witch enslaving his people.

I mean, I get it, don't get me wrong. But he's dragging me along for the ride, and I'm kind of peeved about it. On the bright side, he keeps burning off his shirt.

Apologies! I thought I posted this weeks ago!!

Thank you to everyone who came to the last meet-up and also last nights theatre trip.

The next read is The Last List Of Mabel Beaumont by Laura Pearson

The blurb

The list he left had just one item on it. Or, at least, it did at first…
Mabel Beaumont’s husband Arthur loved lists. He’d leave them for her everywhere. ‘Remember: eggs, butter, sugar’. ‘I love you: today, tomorrow, always’.

But now Arthur is gone. He died: softly, gently, not making a fuss. But he’s still left her a list. This one has just one item on it though: ‘Find D’.

Mabel feels sure she knows what it means. She must track down her best friend Dot, who she hasn’t seen since the fateful day she left more than sixty years ago.

It seems impossible. She doesn’t even know if Dot’s still alive. Also, every person Mabel talks to seems to need help first, with missing husbands, daughters, parents. Mabel finds her list is just getting longer, and she’s still no closer to finding Dot.

What she doesn’t know is that her list isn’t just about finding her old friend. And that if she can admit the secrets of the past, maybe she could even find happiness again…

A completely heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting story, guaranteed to make you smile but also make you cry. Perfect for fans of My Name is Ove, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and The Keeper of Stories.
