Talland Church

Talland Church Ancient to Modern; Holy Site to Web Site This explains why it is so isolated from the busy places of Polperro and Looe.

The church as we see it today was built to maintain a holy site where Christian Faith had been established in Celtic times some fifteen hundred years ago.

This lovely church is one of a kind, it’s location is unique and its position as the parish church of Polperro and west Looe grants it a special place in so many people’s memories, baptisms, weddings and the final chapter. One woman’s wedding means so much to us, that of Mary Tregellas nee Tucket whose wedding dress at 19 years old and her hand embroidered kneeler are on display as part of the notable women of Talland exhibition, Mary now 94 is hoping to make the trip to see the exhibition, where she will be more than welcome, a legend in our midst.

The fabulously talented Talland Quartet entertained and enthralled the gathered audience at our recent concert at Talland Church, so much talent from such young professional performers, it was a pleasure to welcome our musicians and audience to what we hope might be a regular occasion. Well done all involved

In the 1920’s 2 elephants were walked through the town of Looe, part of a visiting circus. Lightly carved on the backs of a pew in Talland Church are a couple of well observed elephants which we think were inspired by the visiting pachyderm

Another vignette celebrating the fabulous Pinwill Sisters (soundsl like a girl band) who were responsible for the carved interior details of over 185 churches in Cornwall and Devon. Their work in Talland is the altar and reredos. Violet one of the sisters died in 1957 leaving rich examples of ecclesiastical carving of the highest standard.

Our exhibition is live, with vignettes around the church celebrating the Notable Women of Talland.
This display represents Joanna Mellow and the beautifully sculpted floor slab at the foot of this display showing a woman holding her baby, sitting on a four poster bed, which records their death during or after childbirth. The mannequin is dressed in a representation of medieval birthing girdle, a parchment accessory which was believed to protect the woman during her pregnancy, lots more information in the display notes.
