During Learning Disability Week last week, we took time to reflect on what good support means, the importance of having the right support, and how much we can learn from each other.

We felt the best way to do this was by listening to the experiences of our colleagues and hearing from those who provide support every day.

Our Autism Lead, Sharon Marsden, recently spoke with Beth, a Support Worker at Waterside Specialist Support Centre, about her experiences supporting people with learning disabilities and autistic people. Beth spoke about the importance of getting to know each person, what it is like to work as a support worker, and how rewarding the role can be.

She explained how supporting people with learning disabilities and autistic people allowed her to experience the world from a different perspective, helping her better understand sensory experiences and individual ways of communicating. She also reflected on the importance of person-centred support and advocated for continued improvements in the community, including more choice, better understanding of sensory needs, and the use of total communication approaches to help people live more fulfilled lives.

Wheels for All 35th Birthday Celebrations Recap 🚲

Alexandra Community Hub hosted a small celebration for the 35th birthday of Wheels for All and invited other services including Brierley Community Hub. It was a great day celebrating all the brilliant work happening across the programme.

We got out on the bikes and certificates were presented to the people we support🏅

A real highlight was recognising our continued partnership with Wheels for All. We’ve recently renewed our agreement, so we’ll continue working closely together and benefiting from their support, training, and access to specialist adapted cycling equipment across Waterside and Alex Hub.

We always have positive feedback from the bike buddy sessions and increased confidence from the people we support. It’s also great to see new equipment being used, including the wheelchair cycle.

Thanks to everyone involved in delivering and supporting the programme, it’s making a real difference, and the people we support are really enjoying the sessions 💙

Last Friday, Brierley Community Hub hosted an Open Morning for the Community Café, organised by the SALT Team in Salford. SALT (Speech and Language Therapy) supports people with communication, eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.

Julie, a Speech and Language Therapist, showed different food textures, explained swallowing and eating difficulties, and demonstrated the use of thickeners for drinks.

There were also tables with communication aids, sensory items and games for everyone to explore.

Philip said he enjoyed the dice game, where you had to describe the picture it landed on. .

It was a fun, sensory and engaging morning, and everyone who attended had a great time. Thank you to Julie and the SALT Team for a fantastic session.

As part of , we're celebrating the amazing talents and achievements of the people we support.

Recently, Seana and her friends from St George's Community Hub took to the stage at We Invented the Weekend at The Lowry with Tracing Steps. It was great to see all their hard work pay off.

When we asked Seana what she enjoyed most, she said: "I love music and dancing, and I loved doing it with my friends. What a day! Thank you St George's and Martine."

We're so proud of Seana and the whole dance group. It's amazing to see people doing what they love and sharing their talents with others.

Seana and the group's performance is a great example of what can be achieved when people are supported to follow their dreams.

Learning Disability Week 2026 💜

This Learning Disability Week, we’re celebrating the voices, achievements, goals and aspirations of the people we support. The theme “Do You See Me?” is about making sure people with learning disabilities are seen, heard and valued.

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing stories from our You Said, We Did forums, achievements, and what people are looking forward to this summer, including holidays, days out and activities.

The people we support will also be taking part in workshops across Salford, joining free activities and information sessions on health and wellbeing. You’ll see lots of photos and feedback from them throughout the week.

We look forward to celebrating the people we support 💜
