It’s Barge Week!
Every year Swindon Phoenix hire a fully accessible barge from Bruce Boats in Great Bedwyn. The barge we always hire is Rebecca and she is fully equipped for people who are less mobile including wheelchair users. The barge has lifts fore and aft, a full size domestic kitchen and fully accessible bathroom.
For six days we take people from a range of different charities and group for a day out on the river going from Great Bedwyn to Hungerford and vice visa.
Yesterday was the turn of the Swindon Parkinson’s Activity Group who had a fun day. One lady told me ‘Going on a barge was on my bucket list. I can’t believe I’m on it and I’ve even got to steer and help work the locks! What a brilliant day.’

As President of Phoenix for the 2024/25 I chose ZABRA - AfreeBra Initiative as one of my charities after I randomly saw a post from them on Facebook. I found out more about their great work and decided that in my Presidential year I would like to support them by collecting pre-loved bras. ZABRA - AfreeBra collect preloved bras to send to different parts of Africa to give to women who have been trafficked, abused or for young women to help stop them being abused. In Africa women not wearing bras are seen as an easy target for r**e and abuse. poverty means they don’t have the money to buy a bra. By collecting bras and sending them to the UK distribution centre they can be sent to a variety of projects across Africa. Hopefully this collection will help make a difference to the lives of 1000’s of women.
Last Wednesday we handed over a total of 2358 pre-loved bras to Swindon Soroptimists who are also collecting. Working together be can make a difference to peoples lives!

Presidents Handover Evening at Tika Tika, Victoria Road, Old Town. Thank you Tika Tika for the great service and amazing food. I had the the pleasure of handing over the Presidial resigns to Richard. Another great evening of fellowship and fun.

Tonight over 30 of us got to try bowls at Westlecot Bowls Club. We had a very enjoyable evening play for 90 minutes and into the club house for drinks and fish and chips. My last social event as President, where has the year gone!!

Our President Elect Richard Smolicz and I were invited guests at the Swindon Town Past Players Dinner at the Nigel Eady County Ground last night. It was an honour to be invited and to help raise funds for the Swindon Prostate Cancer Support Group. Also it was great to meet the town legend that is John Trollope..

On Wednesday we were joined by Emma from the NSPCC. Emma gave a very informative and thoughtful presentation on the work of the NSPCC locally here in Swindon. It will be really great to be able to support them and their very important work by hosting a fundraising meal at Fabio’s on 10th March.

As we close the doors on 2024 The Rotary Club of Swindon Phoenix would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the last year. We’ve had some brilliant times and raised money for local charities along the way. Definitely a win, win!
