Richard Jefferies Museum A small community museum and gardens in the farmhouse where nature writer Richard Jefferies was born.

A small, community-run museum set in the old farmhouse where Victorian nature writer Richard Jefferies was born. As well as the museum, there is a tearoom, and wonderful gardens with a nature trail, wooded picnic area, an orchard, vegetable plots, and a thousand places for children to run about and hide. The museum holds regular events for families, as well as writing classes, poetry events, and opportunities for local people to come and get involved.

Here's hoping the wonderful Internet can help - the Kennet Valley Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers have been demonstrating their skills at the museum, most recently at Apple Day. Some felt bowls have been made, based on a request from a member of the public over the summer - he needed the openings to be larger.

Can the Internet help find said gentleman? Please share!

If you missed out on this year’s Halloween tickets, all is not lost. We are still running Nature Kids over the break, and while there won’t be trick or treating or a fire - our resident ghoul will be resting - there will still be plenty of themed art and activities to get you in the mood for some autumnal and (not so) spooky fun! Check out our SumUp store to book.

The mulberry tree at the end of September - still looking lush and not quite ready for autumn yet!

"Before it is possible to gather the harvest of thought and observation the summer has passed, and we must bind the hastily stitched book with the crimson leaves of autumn."
Field and Hedgerow

"It is enough to lie on the sward in the shadow of green boughs, to listen to the songs of summer, to drink in the sunlight, the air, the flowers, the sky, the beauty of all."

Post-Apple day, let's take some extra time to appreciate these mighty (and sometimes small and mighty) trees that give us so much.

What a day it was at the Richard Jefferies Museum yesterday! The weather was lovely, the apples were crushed, the Bang to Rites drummers clearly made friends of the museum Tony (dancer) and Roy (photographer) very happy...

Our next open day is 6th December, when we celebrate our trees. Did you know that the mulberry tree (which is to the right of this video), has been around longer than Richard Jefferies (he's 148 years young this November)?

We'll be opening our doors to musicians, poets, and lovers of nature (they are not mutually exclusive) from 1-3pm, for our very first Tree Day Open Mic. Let us know by DM if you're interested in performing!

We have the Big Garden Birdwatch here in the UK, but it's also World Migratory Bird Day today. Do you sometimes imagine what the birds are saying as they sing and chirp above us? Jefferies certainly did, as he writes in Wood Magic:

"Next two goldfinches began to fight, and then a blackbird came up from the brook and perched on a rail, and he was such a boaster, for he said he had the yellowest bill of all the blackbirds, and the blackest coat, and the largest eye, and the sweetest whistle, and he was lord over all the blackbirds. In two minutes up came another one from out of the bramble bushes at the corner, and away they went chattering at each other. Presently the starlings on the chimney began to quarrel, and had a terrible set-to. Then a wren came by, and though he was so small, his boast was worse than the blackbird's, for he said he was the sharpest and the cleverest of all the birds, and knew more than all put together."

Sunday is Apple day at the museum!

"They had a song for everything, the mill song, the reapers' song, just as in Somerset, the apple country, they still have a c***r song, or perhaps, rather, an orchard song."
Field and Hedgerow

Live music is provided by Mudhoney Blues band, and the Bang to Rites performance drummers will also be performing during the afternoon - come early to secure a bench!

Doors open at 1pm. Entry is FREE to all, although we'd love it if you could support our museum by buying some refreshments at our tearoom, where a cream tea with fruit or plain scone, whipped cream. strawberry jam, and hot drink are a very affordable £4.

There is some parking available on Day House Lane, and paid public parking at Coate Water Country Park. Parking at the museum is reserved for volunteers and the disabled.

It's World Habitat Day!

"Two thousand times the woods grew green, and ring-doves built their nests. Day and night for two thousand years—light and shadow sweeping over the mound—two thousand years of labour by day and slumber by night. Mystery gleaming in the stars, pouring down in the sunshine, speaking in the night, the wonder of the sun and of far space, for twenty centuries round about this low and green-grown dome."
