Some very exciting highlights for Wildlife Wednesday. A family of 4 badger cubs foraging at night with mum, our first daylight appearance of a badger cub and the sound of summer: a cuckoo calling from a tree on the northern edge of the farm. Sound up to hear badger sow whickering to her cubs and the cuckoo calling!

I'm shortly on my way to work with our talented wildlife group at Pennyhooks: it's Wildlife Wednesday! Here's an 80sec highlight from the 2026 week 19 video that the students will review today. They will follow it with creative projects inspired by what we all see on the farm.

Wildlife Wednesday reveals fox cubs on the farm! There are at least 4, with 3 shown in the video. We know that our students will enjoy looking at this and other video clips of wildlife in their weekly wildlife group. A few nights ago in the high winds, a dead elm tree crashed onto the fox's earth (their den). None of the foxes were hurt, but after what must have been a loud shock, they've chosen to use another entrance.

It's Wildlife Wednesday, folks. A major highlight this week was seeing a group of 7 hares chilling out. There's some great footage of a badger having a good old scratch to get the fleas out of its fur, a nice portrait of the badger cub, some frisky roe deer chasing each other around the lower fields and video of mice fighting! Enjoy. Our students most certainly will when they review the full video later today.

Staff and students are busy preparing for our plant sale on Saturday 16th May. The meadows are looking ever-more beautiful as wild flowers come into bloom, attracting many different species of butterfly. A wonderful time to enjoy the colours of springtime fields.

Wildlife Wednesday highlights. Busy badgers, a muntjac deer and - if you watch all 90 secs to the end - an otter.

The wildflowers are blooming in the Pennyhooks meadows now. It's a fabulous environment for mice and voles, which in turn attract the many predators we see here. I'll be looking for the owls in particular later this year.

We captured lots of badger activity this week. The highlight briefly shown here is mum pulling her protesting cub back into the sett at bedtime. Our students will watch a longer 15 minute video today. They are producing their own lovely records of wildlife, not least drawings that will be part of future Pennyhooks Farm Trust products.
