A wonderful day spent with colleagues at a Pennyhooks Farm Trust staff training day prior to the new term. Fabulous to welcome 2 more staff members to the fold. And to learn about the Trust's ethos and core values, the nuances of working with our autistic young adults and to receive refresher training on first aid. I'm so envious of the new lawn mower!

Wildlife Wednesday and a real treat! I've been photographing wildlife at Pennyhooks for 3 years now, but see much of the mainly-nocturnal animals (otters, badgers, foxes, polecats) through remotely-controlled night vision cameras. Yesterday for the first time as I was servicing one of the remote cameras, 3 otters swam past and I saw them face-to-face. They paused for a quick look at me and I caught it on video. And they obligingly went through the camera trap too early this morning. Happy days!

I'm sorry that it's been quiet for Wildlife Wednesdays lately, but we hope to pick up the tempo again soon. The cameras have been in continuous action, but Paul has been busy working elsewhere.

Pending current insights into what's happening on the farm, this evening we had great fun watching the solar eclipse. After a mad scramble to get to Oxfordshire in time, we set up to watch the event using solar glasses and - as shown in the pictures - with a rapidly-modified telescope. The images show the sequence reading from left-to-right and top-to-bottom.

Playful but powerful polecats for a Wildlife Wednesday highlight. Polecats were hunted to near-extinction in the UK but are making a comeback in lowland farms. We are delighted that a pair have settled at Pennyhooks and raised youngsters here. You'll see play fighting night and day as they hone their hunting skills. And in one clip you'll see a successful hunt with a polecat bringing back a small rabbit; its natural prey. Enjoy 90 secs of polecat power! Our students are seeing lots of these videos right now from our network of camera traps.

a 60 second badger video update for Wildlife Wednesday. All families are doing pretty well, although we may have lost one cub from the 4-cub sett (reason unknown). The rest are all growing fast and in our most northerly sett on Pennyhooks Farm, the sow is teaching her cubs to grub around for worms. You will see the cubs are enthusiastic leaners, with their very powerful sense of smell.

Don't forget - open day this coming Saturday. Lots to see & do. Please come and support the Trust. The weather will be at least 10 degrees cooler by Saturday. But we'll have plenty of shaded and cooler places for you anyway.

We have a family of polecats! Best guess is 3-4 kits. Here's a clip of the youngsters play fighting to improve their agilty and dexterity. Looking forward to chatting with our students about these wonderful animals.
