FIJI’S HIV NATIONAL EMERGENCY: A CALL TO ACTION FOR EVERY FIJIAN
Fiji has formally declared the HIV epidemic a National Emergency, following a significant increase in HIV infections. The declaration was made on 15 September 2026 and has been accompanied by plans to expand HIV testing, prevention and treatment services.
This is a matter that concerns every part of Fiji — our families, children, young people, villages, communities, churches, schools, workplaces and institutions.
DRUG USE AND HIV
Fiji is also confronting serious concerns associated with methamphetamine, commonly known as “ICE.”
The Ministry of Health’s 2025 national HIV statistics recorded 2,016 newly registered HIV cases, the highest annual number recorded since national HIV surveillance began. Among cases with a reported transmission route, 362 (18%) were associated with people who inject drugs.
Sharing injecting equipment can transmit HIV and other blood-borne infections.
The term “bluetoothing” has also been used in Fiji in relation to sharing blood or injecting equipment between people using methamphetamine. While the practice has received significant attention, a WHO-supported assessment noted that evidence for bluetoothing specifically was limited; unsafe reuse or sharing of injecting equipment remains an important HIV risk.

DON’T USE ICE.
DON’T USE DRUGS.
SAY NO TO DRUGS.
PROTECT YOUR LIFE. PROTECT YOUR FUTURE.
To our parents: talk to your children.
To our young people: your future is valuable. Do not allow drugs to take it away.
To our families: recognise the risks and seek help when it is needed.
To our churches, traditional leaders, schools and community organisations: help educate, support and protect our people.
To all Fijians: do not ignore this national emergency.
❤️ LET US ALSO STAND AGAINST HIV STIGMA
People living with HIV are members of our communities and deserve dignity, privacy, respect and access to treatment and care.
HIV is not transmitted through ordinary social contact. Effective HIV treatment can allow people living with HIV to live healthy lives and prevents sexual transmission when an undetectable viral load is maintained.
Awareness must create action — not fear, shame or discrimination.
🇫🇯 THIS IS A NATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Ministry of Health has made clear that the Government cannot address this emergency alone. A whole-of-government and whole-of-society response is required, with communities playing an important role.
