Gower Seal Group, a small local group of volunteers aiming to educate about, and protect, Gower’s Atlantic grey seals

We are a small local group of seal-loving people, dedicated to the conservation and protection of the North Atlantic Grey Seals that visit our Gower coastline. Our aim is to accurately inform and educate about this globally rare species and work alongside local groups and organisations to promote their benefit to the marine environment. We aim to reduce the occurrences and likelihood of these sensitive animals being disturbed by any human intervention. We look forward to delivering presentations whilst securing the support of local people to assist and work with us to achieve our overall aims.

It was a pleasure teaming up with Dawn from The Gower Society Youth Team yesterday, as we took a lovely group of young people out exploring the many rock pools around Rhossili.

It was also an opportunity to give lots of fascinating facts about our wonderful seals and how their lives are very much affected by us humans.

We were blessed with watching over 20 seals resting but we did it responsibly and respectfully not to disturb them.

It was heart warming to spend time with these young seal ambassadors who are our future conservationists.

The Welsh Government have published a public consultation called the Wild Animal Welfare White Paper accessed here: https://www.gov.wales/wild-animal-welfare-white-paper aiming to strengthen the protection of our seals.

Seals are not protected against intentional or reckless disturbance under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and in our opinion urgently need to be.

Please consider accessing the consultation and have your say; we already have.

Spending quality time yesterday with these young people, reinforced our views that we must channel their enthusiasm and desire to protect nature.

Protecting our precious wildlife and environment has now become urgent and we welcome the Welsh Government White Paper 🦭❤

We are proud to work closely with Evangelos and his amazing team at RSPCA East Winch through our membership of the UK Seal Alliance.

These are three heart-breaking stories of three curious seals that suffered immensely because of discarded rubbish including a FLYING RING 🤬🤬🤬

These seals will undergo many months of intense treatment and we hope they all pull through.

We were aware of this poor seal entangled in a flying ring for some time now.

It has suffered for a long time but luckily today was the day that our friends from Friends of Horsey Seals Charity pulled off an amazing rescue 👏👏👏👏

These flying rings are still causing pain, suffering and misery that's why we (UK Seal Alliance) started the campaign 'Save Our Seals from Flying Rings'.

Around 80 percent of British Divers Marine Life Rescue Medics tasks are seal related.

However, medics are also trained to respond to stranded cetaceans such as this common dolphin that found itself in difficulty last week in Mumbles, Swansea.

Having these volunteers available to respond to injured, sick and distressed animals on our shores is invaluable.

We have a strong and committed contingent of BDMLR Medics across South Wales and in fact, we have another training course scheduled for Sunday 20th September at Knab Rock, Mumbles.

Seals are wild animals and should always be treated as such.

They're at their happiest being left alone to be just that...wild and free from human interference.

They are such an important part of the wider marine ecosystem keeping our seas as healthy as possible.

They definitely do not need to be fed by humans.... they can feed themselves as foraging is a crucial part of them being wild.

Giving them space and not getting close is absolutely crucial to their wellbeing. In fact, staying well away from them can be good for your wellbeing too.

Imagine this...you or your unleashed dog gets far too close to a wild seal.

That seal is naturally interpreting you as a threat as its wild and not accustomed to human contact.

It will aggressively defend itself in an effort to minimise harm to itself and escape any potential threat.

If you or your dog is bitten by a seal, then these are typical of the injuries you could sustain.

The bite of a seal is more powerful than you could imagine, and it doesn’t stop there. Its mouth is full of bacteria that can have serious consequences.

Medical treatment must be immediately sought.

Both persons in these photos are experienced seal handlers and rescuers. Accidents do happen despite the steps taken to minimise them...you cannot fully avert risk.

Both required plastic surgery at specialised medical units.

We want you and your dog to be safe.

We also want our wild seals to feel safe.

Please Give Seals Space to be wild and free from threats.

This is a prime example of intentional disturbance 😡

There is no need for this person to behave like this and normalise such behaviour in front of a child.

This area is clearly signposted asking people to respect resting wildlife...however the person in the film has disregarded this.

These seals are merely resting as you and I do.

We don't want others disturbing us as we catch up on our sleep.

The Give Seals Space Campaign is asking the Government to properly protect seals...please sign the petition as we need as many signatures as possible....here is the link: https://c.org/sqtSyp28zD

Could you be the person who helps out when a seal, dolphin, porpoise or even a whale is sick, injured or poorly?

Our colleagues at British Divers Marine Life Rescue have spaces available to train as a Marine Life Rescue Medic here in Wales.

The BDMLR Marine Mammal Medic Course will be held at Knab Rock, Mumbles, Swansea on Sunday 20th September 2026.

Today marks the end of National Seal Week 🦭❤

Over the last seven days, Gower Seal Group have attended 5 events across Gower, Swansea and Port Talbot areas promoting our precious seals to hundreds if not thousands of people.

We have given out countless leaflets and stickers and received enormous support for our 'Save Our Seals from Flying Rings' and 'Give Seals Space' Campaigns.

We thank everyone who came along to meet us...it really was our pleasure.

Today, we were in the grounds of the stunning Margam Park supporting our friends at Port Talbot Coastguard and National Coastwatch Institution - Porthcawl who do an incredible job keeping us safe.

We even had support from 'Margam Castle' the little train who tried his/her very best to look like Thomas the Tank and Friends 🚂
