A huge thank you to our friends at Brecon Mountain Rescue Team for stepping in to help get us operational again following a major rescue to free a trapped caver last month. 🙏

Your support has made a real difference. It's always great to see local teams looking out for one another.

🚨 Incident 30/08/2026 – Caver trapped by rockfall (Ogof Gwynt Yr Eira)

At around 1400 on Sunday, SMWCRT were alerted by Dyfed-Powys Police of a caver trapped by rockfall in Ogof Gwynt Yr Eira. Team members stationed at the South Wales Caving Club at the time were dispatched and arrived shortly on scene, followed by members alerted by SARCALL.

The casualty had been pinned by their helmet by a sizable boulder at the head of a pitch and could not free themself. On arrival, team members established communication lines to the casualty underground and began the careful process of digging them free. Throughout the rescue, team members kept the casualty warm and comfortable, monitoring their condition until they could be safely freed from the rockfall. As a precaution, the cave entrance was also dug out in case a stretcher carry was required to bring the casualty to the surface, which was thankfully not needed.

Once freed, the casualty was assessed by medics and was found well enough to make an assisted exit after they had recovered their energy. They exited the cave at 0015 Monday morning, over 10 hours after the alert was first raised. Our thanks go to all team members involved, as well as the Welsh Ambulance service, the Hazardous Area Response Team, and Dyfed-Powys Police for their support during this rescue.

🚨09/08/2026 - Dog rescue

At 11:30am the Wardens received a SARCALL from a neighbouring Mountain Rescue Team to help Cardiff Police reach a dog stuck down a limestone shaft, 3km across the mountain from the nearest road. Team members were deployed to rescue Dewi, the Golden Cocker Spaniel after he had fallen 4 metres into a narrow shakehole. The team used a reaching pole with a hook to lift him out by his harness, extracting him to the surface unharmed to his very relieved and grateful owners.

On Saturday 4th July, members of the team completed rescue rigging training as a first step to becoming certified SMWCRT pitch riggers.

The day started off with a classroom session kindly lead by Gary Evans which highlighted the basics of the rigging role, including but not limited to, haul types, Pitch-head Management, equipment, and setup.

In the latter part of the day we put the taught theory into practise with a scenario involving a casualty needing hauling.

Special thanks to Llangorse Multi Activity Centre for allowing us to use their facilities, and for the delicious bakes in the cafe 😉.

On Saturday 27th June, the team carried out a successful rescue training exercise within Tooth Cave on the Gower Peninsula.

The day focused on testing control and communications, alongside a realistic casualty evacuation using the Short Slix stretcher through challenging cave passages and up the entrance pitch.

A valuable day of training, with members enhancing their rescue skills and testing communication systems both above and below ground.

🚨28/06/2026 - Calf Rescue

After a busy team training day on the Gower, while kit was being washed and hung out to dry, the team received a call-out from South Wales Police to assist the fire service with a calf that had fallen down a 10m shaft and become trapped near Meardy.

A small number of team members who were already at our rescue HQ responded to the incident, while others remained on standby as Warden training got underway.

The specialist line rescue team from Barry, together with a Fire Rescue tender from Tonypandy Fire Station, had already established hauling and safety systems to lower rescuers into the shaft and had begun the task of securing the calf to the hauling system.

Rescuers successfully raised the calf safely to the surface without causing it any harm, much to the delight of the farming family, who were waiting to assess the calf and reunite it with its mother.

South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team would like to thank the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service for asking for our support and for providing sufficient resources to complete a successful rescue in a safe and controlled manner.

On the 2nd May, we hosted our annual Rescue Auction, with donations of retired rescue equipment, as well as from team members and supporting companies.

The auction raised over £3800 - a record for an SMWCRT auction! Thank you to all those who came to support the team and to those who donated items.

These funds allow us to continue to provide assistance to people and animals in need underground.

We would like to thank Dan-yr-Ogof Showcaves, Action Stash, Fenixlight UK, and Keela for their generous donations towards the auction.
