Welcome to Swansea Autism Support - SAS.
This is a new page that aims to be the SAS of autism support.
In my experience, the true support is very much lacking with regard to autism. And although we shouldn't judge others, I personally have been judged on my journey from those claiming to offer support. Not only that, but I have been declined support or acceptance to groups as my child/children don't match their particular criteria or have lacked a formal diagnosis, thus meaning we have been rejected.
I could sit back and complain, or actually be the change... be the difference and set up a support hub of sorts where those seeking support can come together and create the ripple and wave of a true support network.
My intention is also to set up a private group where many people will feel more confident reaching out or even just venting.
I'm a firm believer in springboarding... not sure if that term is a real thing, or one I simply made up...... but it's always my go-to! When we spring board off another person it can lead us to more strength and confidence often in our own answers to our questions. It can often motivate and push us through boundaries we would otherwise never have crossed or maybe even considered.
I'm not expecting this to become a large community, this is just my mere brain child to help others who have been where I am and still often visit to realise they are not alone.
We level in a very neuro diverse world, yet there is still so much judgement out there when the general consensus is acceptance. Yet many within the community are the most judgemental, dismissive or as I've personally found not the inclusive people they portray themselves as.
I feel it's time to step out and create an environment that is inclusive irrelevant of diagnosis. An environment that is a safe space where many families can reach out for support from other families who have been on the same journey and are happy to share their story and support.
Sadly the system is broken and truth be known it always has been, but together we can make a difference. Here's to hoping that the pipe dream of such a community becomes our reality 💕
