Project SIARC

A busy few weeks on the water for some of the team. We’ve been carrying out servicing and data downloads on the acoustic array, alongside retrieving receivers that broke away from surface buoys.

With downloads complete, further data analysis can be continued . This will help us better understand the movements of tagged tope sharks. Because the receivers can also pick up other fish species fitted with acoustic tags, this work helps broaden our understanding of marine life and collaborative research with other projects across Wales and beyond.

None of this would be possible without the close collaboration of local charter and commercial fishers.

The start of this month saw members of the SIARC team head out within the ACA Pen Llŷn a’r Sarnau SAC to recover acoustic receivers whose moorings had been damaged during winter 2025.

Following a brief spell of calm weather, the team were able to conduct four SCUBA dives to retrieve the receivers and download the data. This information helps us better understand the movements of Tope sharks within the area, along with other tagged fish species detected by the acoustic array.

We’re looking forward to sharing more updates over the coming months and continuing the servicing of the array as weather conditions allow.

It’s been exciting to see a number of recent angelshark sightings reported around the Welsh coast.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share details of their encounters. Each record helps us build a better understanding of this elusive and Critically Endangered species.

If you accidentally catch, or spot, an angelshark:

👉 Follow the Angel Shark Project Best Practice Guide to ensure safe handling and release. (Link in bio)
👉 Take a moment to report your sighting. Even basic details can provide valuable information about this unique species.
👉 Reminder that they a protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act where it is an offence to target the species.

🦈 This year we’ve been collaborating with the Swansea Fish Telemetry group (SWiFT ) to tag tope sharks in Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries SAC.
In June, three members of Project SIARC joined the SWiFT team to train them in tope tagging techniques while also collecting samples to further research into reproductive ecology of tope in Wales.
~ Over two days 20 tope were caught and fitted with acoustic tags to monitor movements around Wales for the next 5 years. Just 3 weeks later, one of the tagged tope was caught by a charter fisher near Amlwch, Anglesey having travelled over 300km! We can’t wait to find out how far these tope will travel in the next 256 weeks!

Ym mis Mehefin, ymunodd tri aelod o Brosiect SIARC â thîm SWiFT i’w hyfforddi mewn technegau tagio Cŵn glas gan hefyd gasglu samplau i ymchwilio ymhellach i ecoleg atgenhedlu Cŵn glas yng Nghymru.
~ Dros ddau ddiwrnod, daliwyd 20 Ci glas a’u gosod gyda thagiau acwstig i fonitro symudiadau o amgylch Cymru am y 5 mlynedd nesaf. Dim ond 3 wythnos yn ddiweddarach, cafodd un o’r Cŵn glas a dagiwyd ei ddal gan bysgotwr siarter ger Amlwch, Ynys Môn, ar ôl teithio dros 300km! Fedrwn ni ddim disgwyl i weld pa mor bell bydd y Cŵn glas hyn yn teithio dros y 256 wythnos nesaf!

🎉 Rydym wrth ein bodd i rannu bod Prosiect SIARC wedi derbyn cefnogaeth gan Gronfa Dreftadaeth y Loteri Genedlaethol, oherwydd chwaraewyr y
🎉 We’re thrilled to share that we have received support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to players!

Building on our work to date, this new funding will support the next phase of Project SIARC, helping us deepen our work with coastal communities and improve understanding of Wales’ threatened sharks, skates and rays in the Pen Llŷn a’r Sarnau and Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Areas of Conservation.
Together, we will:
🦈 Continue collaboration with communities and fishers to improve understanding of shark, skate and ray ecology
🌊 Co-develop inclusive, bilingual opportunities for people to discover and participate in marine conservation
🤝 Support skills development and help remove barriers to engagement with marine conservation, particularly for young people and women
📚 Strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange to maximise conservation impact

We look forward to building on existing partnerships to celebrate Wales’ coasts and seas and increase opportunities for people to connect with the sharks, skates and rays that call them home 🩵

We are delighted to be part of the day with our shark scientists Joanna Barker and Dr David Curnick, who will be introducing the films and taking part in a live Q&A.
