Burngate Purbeck Stone Centre Located in the Isle of Purbeck to teach the local community and visitors the beauty of stone carving reliefs, lettering and sculptures.

Book classes or buy vouchers at www.burngatestonecentre.co.uk or just drop by. We have a varied programme of courses and activites, with something to suit everyone from 8 years to 80+ years. It enables a novice, improving and advanced stone carver to explore their creativity in the heart of the Purbeck stone industry. The location is inspirational, and the surrounding landscape of fields, old quarry workings and cliffs above the English Channel is a designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is also part of the Jurassic coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We are open when courses are running at other times leave a message on the phone or send us an email.

For Q4/2026, Burngate Purbeck Stone Centre is pleased to be working with Sarah Acton, on her project 'Of Quarries and Stone'.

This is a research and development project supported by Arts Council England which includes writing poetry and prose using interviews and archives and inspired by the quarries and stone-carving industry of the Isle of Purbeck.

The project culminates with Sarah exhibiting her poetry, prose and her stone-carvings in our Burngate Gallery through January 2027.

Burngate are pleased to support Sarah's project by offering selected courses at specially reduced rate through Q4/2026.

Community Carving in Tuesday nights at Burngate Stone Carving Centre in Langton Matravers. No need to book, just rock up. £10 per session. There are no tutors, we can sell you stone or lend you tools if you need them.

We are running a series of courses this summer at Burngate. Beginners welcome on ‘Have A Go’ and classes like ‘Precision Carving’ for those who want to take it a step further. Classes on regular classes on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and special ones like ‘Surprising Snails’ in addition to those. Book through the Burngate website (link above).

*** COMMUNITY CARVING TUES 23RD / HAVE A GO STONE-CARVING THURS 25TH JUNE BOTH CANCELLED ***

Due to the high temperature conditions this week, we have taken the decision to cancel the Community Carving on Tuesday 23rd June and the Have a Go Stone-Carving on Thursday 25th.

A decision on the Have a Go Stone-Carving on Sat 27th will be made on Thurs 25th.

Any bookings already made for these courses will be offered alternative dates.
