We’ve seen quite a few this week with sunshine and showers, but this rainbow framed our KIA Ceed SW nicely at Kingsmill Hospital yesterday! Snapped by Andy Gl!

We’re a M+S Renewables community support fund finalist!

🌟 Community Support Fund Finalist: Derbyshire Blood Bikes 🌟

We’re pleased to introduce another finalist in the M+S Renewables Community Support Fund: Derbyshire Blood Bikes.

Their nomination statement:

“Derbyshire Blood Bikes provide a 24/7 medical courier service to the NHS across the county, completely free of charge.

Transporting diagnostic samples, transfusion products, medication and donated human milk, their volunteers use motorcycles and cars to ensure the service operates all year round. In 2025, they made over 8,600 journeys.

The service helps patients receive timely diagnosis and treatment, while saving the NHS around £500,000 each year.”

We’re proud to recognise the incredible commitment of Derbyshire Blood Bikes and the vital service their volunteers provide to patients and NHS services across the county.

The public vote opens on Sunday 7th.

Please note: voting is not open yet. Votes will only count once the official voting post/link goes live.

Being asked to do a 10 minutes ‘talk’ to a local Rainbow group, girls aged from 4 to 6 years, was always going to be delightful, the questions from inquisitive young people are always wonderful, and so it was with lots of enthusiasm, particularly to sit on the blood bike.

But it didn’t end there with the 1st West Hallam group, as the Brownies, Guides and Rangers all wanted to hear about Derbyshire Blood Bikes.

But it was also a special evening for Ops Manager Mark with Granddaughters, Thea and Anya, both part of the Brownie and Guide Groups. (Thanks to their Mum for permission to use their lovely pictures)

Thank you to the 1st West Hallam Group for the invitation.

Paul has been on it this week. On Tuesday he was part of a relay from
Scotland to London and yesterday, he made an almost repeat run to help bring donated human milk from the the northeast to The Hearts Milk Bank

Working with Northumbria Blood Bikes and Serv Herts & Beds groups, several donations were safely delivered to the milk bank for processing.

Well done all!

This week, Chairman Mike, went to the Royal Derby Hospital to meet the family of Caroline Howett, who recently passed away, aged 82.

She was diagnosed with AML in July last year. Originally given 2 years, but this was drastically cut to 6 months due to the aggressiveness of the disease, and the medication just didn’t touch it.

Caroline often needed blood and especially platelets just keep her energy up. Derbyshire Blood Bikes were called upon on many occasions to collect the platelets for her.

Her family said… “without you guys, she just wouldn’t have had the energy to do the things that we did with her in those final months”

We don’t often find out about the patients we help so hearing we made a difference to someone, even for a short time, makes what we do so worthwhile.

Every journey has a purpose, and thanks to the generosity of the family and friends, we can make many more.
