Sutton Nature Conservation Volunteers

Sutton Nature Conservation Volunteers Sutton Nature Conservation Volunteers, SNCV, is the main nature conservation organisation focused on operating within the London Borough of Sutton.

With our origins dating back to 1987 we have been 'Helping wildlife on Sutton's doorstep ever since. Our main aims are the conservation and improvement of sites of wildlife value in the borough. We carry out practical maintenance and habitat management work throughout the year. These tasks include hedgelaying, coppicing, scrub clearance and fence construction. During the spring and summer, we also

carry out ecological surveys and monitoring, recording plants and animals to help inform our management. The sites that we work on vary in character and size, from small pockets of ‘green space’ to large Local Nature Reserves. Some of these sites have limited public access and so volunteer task days provide excellent opportunities to see some hidden wildlife gems! We are lucky to have a variety of habitats within Sutton, including chalk grassland, woodland and wetlands & ponds, all of which we help to maintain and conserve for wildlife. Sutton Nature Conservation Volunteers is a key partner to the London Borough of Sutton Biodiversity Team and our work contributes to helping to improve the overall biodiversity in Sutton and counts towards the targets set out in the Biodiversity Action Plan 2010-2015. In all, SNCV contributes around 700 volunteer days per year to help local wildlife and habitats.

Tuesday 2nd June 2026 - It was a day of showers both heavy and fine for todays assembly of a team working at Perretts Field.

As bands of grey clouds parted away to blue sky multiple times overhead the team undertook phase 1 surveys to the whole site as well as the smaller SFI area as well as engaging in a spot of w**ding of Docks and Thistles and pushing back of edges of Bramble to create more of a transitional zone to the tree line.

Thursday 28th May 2026 - The Sun was still beating down on todays team, unfortunately there was a tad less shade to shelter under as they toiled at Kimpton Balancing Pond and Buffer Strip.

Beginning survey season, as a couple of the team shook off the memory rust to complete the rapid grassland and phase 1 assessments the remaining squad completed a needed litter pick before diverting attention to w**ding of undesirable species in the grassland and Bramble trimming around the scrub islands.

Tuesday 26th May 2026 - Despite the scorching Sun and temperature a fairly large team were out at Queen Marys Woodland making good use of the myriad of shade to get both planned tasks done and recently completed works redone!

As the the larger contingent of the team got the day started with the first in a couple of areas worth of w**ding out done a smaller detachment set off to collect some woodchip to aid another of the tasks later on, the continuation of watering in and mulching around the tree whips planted over the Winter.

Once back on site, as the above jobs proceeded an unfortunate sense of deja vu was had by a couple of the team as one of the new fence barriers constructed a week earlier had to be completely reworked with some more substantial lengths of timber and wider holes to remedy a bit of pointless vandalism!!

Thursday 21st May 2026 - With a heatwave beginning to kick in the fair sized team grabbed some needed shade when and where they could as they split up to cover three sites.

Amassing at Richmond Green where the larger division of the team remained all day, some of the team set about continuing the w**ding activities on the grassland and ephemeral pond before seeds start developing and spreading whilst the remaining portion devoted their energies to picking out loose stones on the bare soil and watering the plug plants put in two weeks ago.

With the rest of the team being mobile it was away to Therapia Lane Rough for the first stop where a couple of areas of grassland got a brush-cutting and thuggish plant species got w**ded from the midst's of the desirables coming through before a return to Mellows Park Butterfly Bank yielded three full bags worth of w**ded Docks, Brassicas, Creeping Thistle and brush-cut rank grasses.

Tuesday 19th May 2026 - The drizzly rain came to an end just as the substantial sized team kicked into gear for another days exploits at Queen Marys Woodland.

Dividing up to tackle a handful of tasks the site became a hive of activity as continuation of the brush-cutting to the central ride recommenced, a steady convoy of wood chippings was ferried too the trees planted up at the beginning of the year to provide a moisture retaining and w**d suppressing mulch around them, thuggish plant species and Bramble were w**ded out from various grassland compartments and lastly some barricading fencing was created to stem the trampling into the woodland interior to protect tree whips and patches of Dogs Mercury making a strong appearance.

Thursday 14th May 2026 - It was a mixed day of spots of sunshine and periods of sharp downpours (with thunder in the background) as a sizeable contingent of volunteers carried out works at Richmond Green and Mellows Park.

With another batch of plug plants to supplement the ones already installed last Saturday, the team divided up with the majority making good use of the kneelers putting in the plants along the re-profiled banks whilst the sliver of the team remaining set about a brief bit of grass cutting and w**ding out Burdock, Creeping Thistle and Green Alkanet from the recovering trampled grassland.

After a fairly heavy further shower the smaller contingent of the squad departed for Mellows Park where some now heavily saturated grass-cuttings around the Butterfly Bank were raked and collected up and a start was made on w**ding out the thuggish species making residence on the undulations including a number of waist height fearsome Spear Thistles.

Tuesday 12th May 2026 - It was a bright day with a bit of a cooling twist in the air as the large assembly of a team were boosted by the arrival of a new volunteer.

Beginning activities at the Wellfield complex of sites, the team spanned the periphery of both Wellfields East and West for the morning, brush-cutting the surrounding verges, trimming out self seeded Sycamore and Cherry Laurel regrowth along the pathway and attending to the tree whips planted around the first weeks of the year, clearing away a span of competing vegetation from around them all and giving them a good gulp of water.

Moving to Queen Marys Woodland via a sojourn at Wellfield South to pluck some Everlasting Pea, the team continued on with a spot more brush-cutting to the central ride, tended to this sites tree whips and w**ded out emergences of undesirables such as Creeping Thistle from the Wood Pasture area.

Thursday 7th May 2026 - For the third Thursday in a row a slightly smaller team worked at Beddington Park concentrating their efforts on the London Road meadow.

With a seemingly permanent band of dark grey cloud overhead the squad got to work selectively mowing the meadow to preserve desired species coming through in abundance whilst tackling areas of grassland and scrub edges festooned with self seeded Poplar and obligatory Bramble.
