10th May 1985, the Clash played Stockton Road Bunker.
This was an impromptu gig after last orders in the Carlton Bar. The Clash landed in Sunderland on Friday afternoon after playing in York the day before, apparently one of the band had a sister at Sunderland Poly, so based themselves in Sunderland for the weekend.
It was only by chance that the Clash played the Bunker that night. Sean Moore had been given the keys to lock up the Bunker after the last band practice, he went to the Carlton Bar met the Clash and told them they could play the Bunker.
So after last orders the whole of the student Carlton Bar and the Clash ended up outside the Bunker, Sean was nowhere to be seen, luckily we turned up only to find the police had turned up as well. A search party was sent out for Sean and the keys.
We were amazed to see Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon standing in the Bunker doorway, after a short conversation we tried to explain to Strummer why we had to get people off the street, the police weren't happy with the gathering crowd. Other committee members found Sean and the keys, Joe's behaviour was a bit s**t to us that night, when he said " Do you know who we are" I was totally blown away. We opened up and bundled the band into the venue and quickly got everyone in. Some of us went back outside to talk to the police to clear things up.
The Clash played a mixture of old classics and some of their new stuff, the crowd loved it, but for us it was a bit of a nightmare. We couldn't get them off the stage, the lights were turned on two or three times. Eventually after about 80 minutes the gig finished, we ushered out the Clash and the crowd, they disappeared into the night and went with their entourage to play the Drum Club.
