Our Story
Senora is a beautiful classic yacht, a 50 foot motorsailer. in 2018 she celebrates her 110 th birthday! She is one of the very few motorsailers designed by the celebrated Scottish yacht designer Alfred Milne. He designed her in 1907 for Mr Gavin Rankin, a Scots business man who made his millions selling drainpipes! Maybe he needed a bit of romance in his life, because her name is Portuguese and means ‘Lady’. She was built in 1908 by a specialist in Milne designed yachts, Mr Archibald Malcolm, and his men, at Port Bannatyne on the Isle of Bute. She was owned by many people in her long life, some rich and famous, some simply good sailors. She served the country in both World War I and II, mostly as a minesweeper. We’re not sure whether she took part in Dunkirk.
The Senora Trust is restoring this beautiful yacht so that she can be available to everyone who wants to learn to sail.
The restoration work benefits people in the North East by providing training in wood and metal work, health & safety, first aid, and educational activities. When she is fully restored, Senora will become a sail training vessel for the NE. She will be funded by grants and commercial chartering, so that charity groups and community groups will be able to sail on her at low cost or even for free.
