Student Champs sign-ups close this Friday ⏰

If you’re a teacher with a few students who’d happily talk about gaming all lunchtime, this is your nudge to put them together and enter a team!!

It’s about more than the competition itself. Students get to practice working as a team, communicating under pressure and taking the lead, and it’s a good way to get involved the kids who don’t usually join clubs.

There are new games this year too, including Marvel Rivals and Clash Royale so there’s something for most players.

It’s open to secondary schools, FE colleges and AP schools, for students aged 12 and over 🏫

Get your group signed up before Friday 👉 https://champs.britishesports.org/registrationselection

What a week 🙌

On Thursday, we welcomed teams from 10 nations to the British Arena for the inaugural International Defence Esports Games, with GB taking home three trophies. 🏆

And now we’re on BBC News... with Sunderland recognised as a hub for the UK’s thriving esports industry 📺

It’s a moment we’ve been working towards for a long time. Every event, every player, every partner and everyone in the Sunderland community who’s backed us along the way has helped build this, and it feels incredible to see it recognised on Look North and beyond.

This is only the beginning for British Esports, the arena is open and the calendar is filling up. We can’t wait to show you what’s next 🎮🔥

The International Defence Esports Games 2026 is completed and in the books, this event wouldn’t have happened without our amazing partners 🙌

Thank you to Babcock International, BAE Systems Digital Intelligence, Bizzell, Dell Technologies, DXC Technology, Lockheed Martin, M&C Saatchi World Services and Sunderland City Council for backing IDEG26 alongside the British Esports Federation and the UK Ministry of Defence.

Over the week, Armed Forces athletes competed in our brand new British Arena, while partners joined us for conversations on how esports can help build digital and cyber skills, widen the talent pool and bring industry and defence closer together.

Joel Lavery, VP of Strategic Partnerships at British Esports, said partners are already planning bigger and better for 2027 👀

Community & Communication🤝

Esports has opened doors for young people who don't always find their place in traditional sports, offering the same sense of belonging, school pride, and structured commitment (practice schedules, tournaments, team roles).

They're building real life skills. Communicating clearly under pressure, calling shots, reading teammates, and problem-solving on the fly are all skills that transfer straight from the game to the classroom and beyond.

Changes to Champs 🏆

We've updated the format based on your feedback... less confusing, more straightforward.

All four original titles, VALORANT, League of Legends, Overwatch 2, and Rocket League will be returning, alongside new additions from previous cups.

The new format, including sign-up window and stage dates, will be announced following review by the Student Champs Committee.

We're also pleased to announce the Student Champs Racing League, including two brand new titles joining Champs this year 👀

More details to follow soon!

Performance Under Pressure ⏱️

Split-second decisions. High stakes. A crowd watching.

Competitive gaming puts young people in genuinely pressure-filled moments, and teaches them to stay calm, think clearly, and adapt on the fly. That's a skill that carries straight into exams, interviews, and public speaking...
