provides a free radio service to patients No experience is required as full training is given

Established in 1953, Radio Sunderland for Hospitals is a self-supporting organisation staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers. It is through the generous support of local associations, companies and individuals that we have been able to operate for so long. Our aim is to make life a little more bearable and provide some relief to a patient’s often-stressful stay in hospital with our broadcasting and ward visiting service. We provide a wide variety of programmes including music, feature programmes, news, information and sport - 24 hours a day! Anyone can be a volunteer as long as they are at least 16 (no upper age limit).

An ITV Tyne Tees News news crew visited our studio and a ward in the Sunderland Royal Hospital as hospital radio in the UK celebrated 100 years of service.
Here at Sunderland our organisation was first formed as the Commentators Association in 1953.
York Hospital Radio also featured as the first UK hospital station.
