🔵 A Great Start to the New Masonic Season in Durham

The new Masonic season got well underway at Durham Freemasons Hall this week as Connaught Lodge No. 4479 welcomed Assistant Head of Durham Freemasons Tom Gittins, accompanied by a number of the newly appointed Provincial Officers who make up the South East Area ‘Mini Team’.

The Brethren were treated to an excellent demonstration of a First Degree ceremony, but with a difference. Throughout the ceremony, explanations were given about the reasons and meaning behind many of the actions that take place during a First Degree – an informative and rarely seen presentation which gave everyone present an opportunity to look again at a familiar ceremony from a different perspective.

Following the meeting, the Brethren continued the evening together at the Festive Board, renewing friendships and enjoying the friendship and camaraderie that are such an important part of Freemasonry.

It was also particularly pleasing to welcome a visiting Brother from Essex, who was quickly made to feel at home and was very complimentary about both the ceremony and the warm welcome he received throughout the evening.

A great start to the season for Connaught Lodge and the South East Area Mini Team – bringing Brethren together, supporting our Lodges and enjoying Freemasonry together.

One of the pleasures of being Deputy Grand Supt of the Durham Royal Arch is to represent Durham Freemasons Charity when they award grants to local charities. Today I visited Minerva Arts & Wellbeing charity at Hendon in Sunderland and gave the CEO Mark Burns Cassell a cheque for £700 towards the work they do with female former offenders to help provide structure in their lives when they first come out of prison. A very small contribution towards setting women on a better path after the trauma of prison, to support the vastly overstretched resources that Probation and others provide🙏.

Inquests have opened into the deaths of PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, who were among seven people killed in the A66 crash near Middlesbrough.

Casting Out Isolation – Durham Freemasons Help Veterans Connect Through Fishing

Fishing, friendship and camaraderie were the order of the day as veterans came together at Aldin Grange Fishery in Bearpark for the annual Veterans Fishing Day.

Supported by the Durham Freemasons Armed Forces Network, Chester-le-Street Anglers Lodge and the Durham Branch of the Masonic Fishing Charity, the day was about far more than who caught the most fish.

Former Army medic Paul Calvert, who hadn’t fished since he was a boy with his dad, summed up what the day meant:

“Today I’ve found a sense of peace I haven’t felt for a long time.”
