About Us

This group is not just for parents. It’s also for grandparents, carers, guardians, teachers and ALL concerned adults in and around Sunderland who support the youth strike movement in their demands for a safe climate future. Collectively, we are the metaphorical parents of future generations and we are here to stand up for a planet that can support the children of the future. The children in your life may be old enough to have made their own decisions about striking from school, or if they are still too young you may wish to represent them yourself at the strikes. This group is for sharing pertinent information about the strikes but NOT to debate whether strikes should be happening. Young people are striking because they must. Climate breakdown, pollution and ecosystem loss are the biggest threats to society now and will be for generations to come. Their futures have been put at risk by a system based on the myth of infinite growth on a finite planet. In the 2018 IPCC report the world’s leading scientists examined 6,000 studies and agreed that even with the most conservative estimation we only have until 2030 to stop irreversible climate catastrophe and continued mass extinctions. Droughts, flooding, storms and ocean die-off are already affecting much of the world’s population, especially those in the global south. The UN’s first comprehensive report on biodiversity (May 2019) stated that nature is in more trouble now than at any other time in human history. Extinction is looming for over 1 million species.

Our primary demand is for policy makers at all levels to unite behind the science and do everything necessary to stop the planet exceeding 1.5 degrees heating over pre-industrial levels. Children have an urgent message. Let's help them to amplify it! We call on our government to take immediate and far reaching action to mitigate the current ecological and climate disaster that we - and our children - are facing.

Please join us in fighting for a safe, just future for our children, our grandchildren and all life on Earth. Every breath we take and every bite we eat relies on a healthy planet, but at the moment our planet is dying. We must work together across generations to save it by demanding our leaders act NOW. The containment of human-induced climate change must become the greatest achievement of this century.
