Children Need Loving Families Not Orphanages

10/06/2026

Did you know that more than 80% of children living in orphanages in Sri Lanka are not orphans.

They have families who love them. But poverty has made separation feel like the only option.

At Their Future Today, we believe there is always another way. We work with families to reduce the pressures that lead to separation because poverty should never cost a child their family.

With the right support, families stay strong. Children stay at home. And futures change.

Children need families. Not orphanages.

Nimmu went on a four-hour journey to reach a remote village in Sri Lanka.

26 children were waiting for her, excited and ready to learn again.

These children lost almost everything in Cyclone Ditwah — a disaster that impacted 2.3 million people, claimed over 600 lives, and has left more than 150,000 families still displaced.

73 children in the affected region lost their parents. Three of them live in this village.

Not one child has been placed in an institution. Every single one is being cared for within their community and by families who love them.

Nimmu has been brining school book packs which may seem like a small thing, but when a family has lost everything, the chance for a child to learn again restores hope. It eases the burden on those caring for them. It helps keep children at home where they belong.

These families urgently need dry food rations and the school has also asked for musical instruments to help lift the children's spirits.

Every child has the right to grow up in a safe, loving family.

Today we pause to remember the children across the world who aren't able to.

In Sri Lanka alone, more than 10,000 children are living in institutions, without a family, an education or a future. Poverty often causes children to become separated from the families who love them.

Most of them aren't orphans. They're children given up in the hope of a better life, by parents who don't always realise the long-term damage that institutional care causes.

We keep children safe by keeping families strong. That means strengthening families before crisis hits, reducing the pressures that cause separation, and building the family-based care systems that Sri Lanka's children deserve.

If you'd like to support that work today, please visit https://checkout.justgiving.com/c/3178235 to make a donation.

We're so grateful for everyone who stands with us. Thank you 💛

Poverty, not abandonment, is the leading cause of family separation in Sri Lanka.

Parents give up children in the hope of a better life, not knowing the harm that institutional care causes.

That's why we work to break that cycle.

School meals that keep children healthy and in education.

Direct support that has already prevented six families this year from placing their children in institutions.

Skills training that helps parents build a sustainable future.

Please help us turn that into reality. Donate at https://checkout.justgiving.com/c/3178235

Thank you for your generous support 💛

Happy Vesak to all who are celebrating today 🌸🕯️

Vesak marks the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha - one of the most sacred and joyful occasions in the Sri Lankan calendar. It is a day of compassion, reflection, and generosity. A reminder that care for others, especially the most vulnerable, is at the heart of a meaningful life.

It's a belief that sits at the very core of what we do. Every day, we work alongside communities in Sri Lanka to ensure children grow up in safe, loving families with the dignity, stability and love that every child deserves.

This Vesak, if you'd like to honour that spirit of compassion in a practical way, consider supporting a family in need: https://checkout.justgiving.com/c/3178235
