One of the classic films that earned Alfred Hitchcock the nickname of "Master of Suspense" is coming to the big screen in Sully this week, and you can watch it for free.

The 39 Steps, the Master's version of the frequently adapted story by John Buchan, is being shown at the Old School on South Road as part of Sully Community Cinema's Free Film Friday series. This timeless thriller (cert. U) follows heroic Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) as he is accidentally plunged into a cross-country chase involving spies, assassins, and a mysterious conspiracy. Is the woman (Madeleine Carroll) who ends up being handcuffed to him a friend or an enemy, and can he discover the truth about the 39 Steps before it is too late? Find out by watching the fast-moving mix of drama, action, and sexual chemistry in a film that has often been voted one of the best British movies of all time and was described by the legendary Orson Welles as a masterpiece.

Join us at the Old School on Friday, May 29, at 1.30pm for free refreshments before the film begins at 2pm. Also, look out for our calendar on display around Sully and save the dates for our next films.

Hamnet has won numerous awards and left audiences around the world deeply moved. Now you can find out what the fuss is all about, as the film is being shown on the big screen in Sully next week.

On Wednesday, May 13, Sully Community Cinema will be showing this highly rated historical drama about William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes (Anne) Hathaway, and the love and grief surrounding their young son. Directed and co-written by Chloé Zhao, who won an Oscar for Nomadland, this hit film features Oscar winner Jessie Buckley (Wicked Little Letters, Taboo, Chernobyl), Normal People star and BAFTA winner Paul Mescal, and Oscar nominee Emily Watson (War Horse, The Theory of Everything). Based on the novel by Maggie O'Farrell and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, Hamnet won widespread praise from critics for the cast's acting and the emotional story, and it was nominated for eight Oscars, six Golden Globes, and 11 BAFTAs, plus many other honours.

Join us on Wednesday at the Old School on South Road to discover the power of Hamnet for yourself. Tickets at £5, which includes a free drink from our cash bar, will be available at the door from 7pm, and the film starts at 7.30pm. We look forward to seeing you for an evening of socialising with your Sully neighbours and a film that is sure to be remembered for many years to come.

The unique Peter Sellers will be remembered for many comic characters, but perhaps his most famous is the hilarious and hapless Inspector Clouseau. This week, you can see Sellers in action in what is often regarded as the funniest Clouseau film, free of charge.

As part of its Free Film Friday series, Sully Community Cinema is showing the highly rated comedy A Shot in the Dark on Friday afternoon at the Old School on South Road. Join us to see Clouseau assigned to a high-profile murder case where he falls - sometimes literally - for the prime suspect, Maria (played by Elke Sommer). As the body count begins to rise and chaos ensues, Clouseau discovers that there might be more to the innocent-looking Maria than meets the eye. Could he be wrong about her?

A Shot in the Dark (cert. PG) - directed by Blake Edwards, who was in charge of many of the Pink Panther films as well as Breakfast at Tiffany's - also stars George Sanders, Herbert Lom as Clouseau's increasingly frustrated boss, and Burt Kwouk as his devoted (and dangerous) manservant Kato.

Join us on Friday from 1.30pm for free tea and biscuits before the film starts at 2pm. Entrance is free, and we look forward to seeing you!

Elizabeth "Lee" Miller's colourful life took her from the world of high fashion in New York to photographing Londoners during the Blitz and one of the worst events of World War II, until she eventually found herself sitting in Hitler's bath. Now you can see her extraordinary story being recreated by Kate Winslet in the hit film Lee, which is coming to Sully's Old School on Wednesday.

This highly-rated and moving drama about a brave woman overcoming all kinds of obstacles to forge a new life for herself is being shown by Sully Community Cinema. It sees the Oscar-winning Winslet - who was nominated for several awards for playing Lee Miller - alongside Andy Samberg (The Roses), Alexander Skarsgård (Succession), and Andrea Riseborough (Made in Dagenham).

Lee (cert. 15), which became Sky UK's highest-grossing film at the British box office, will be shown at the Old School on South Road from 7.30 pm. Tickets at £5 include a free drink from our cash bar and will be available at the door from 7 pm. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday - and look out for our posters around the village for details of our upcoming Wednesday-night films and our free Friday matinees.

When a gang of hardened criminals need a hide-out to plan a daring robbery, the rundown house of elderly Mrs Wilberforce looks ideal. However, they have not reckoned on her being a bit too curious, and a bit too friendly with the local police officers. When events spiral out of control, it looks like there might be only one solution: murder ...

The dilemma facing mastermind "Professor Marcus" and his crew of thieves is at the centre of a beloved British film from the 1950s, The Ladykillers, which is being shown free of charge this week at Sully's Old School on South Road. The black comedy (cert. PG), which has been described by critics as "near flawless" and "wonderfully macabre", features some of the biggest stars of the day: Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Katie Johnson, Herbert Lom, and Frankie Howerd. Watch and laugh as the increasingly desperate and treacherous gang try to solve their dangerous problem, while keeping up their cover as a civilised band of musicians.

The newly restored presentation of this legendary Ealing comedy is part of Sully Community Cinema's Free Film Friday series, and takes place on Friday, March 27, from 2 pm. Doors will open at 1.30 pm, when along with free entrance you will be able to enjoy free tea and biscuits and a chance to socialise before settling down for 90 minutes of on-screen mischief and mayhem.

We look forward to seeing you!

The Choral is a moving story about a community united by music, and the power some people have to inspire those around them. It is also the latest presentation from Sully Community Cinema, and it's coming to the Old School this month.

The British film (cert. 12A) brings together Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes, Roger Allam (Endeavour), Mark Addy (The Full Monty, Game of Thrones), and many more in an emotional drama about a small town during World War I. As more and more of its young men are sent away to fight, the local choir faces a crisis and turns to the controversial Henry Guthrie to help. He has to call on unusual recruits and make unexpected changes to keep the choir afloat and help the community, while some of his singers face problems of their own, this time involving romance ...

Written by legendary dramatist Alan Bennett and directed by Nicholas Hytner, The Choral is being shown at Sully's Old School on South Road on Wednesday, March 11. Tickets at £5, which includes a free drink from our cash bar, will be available at the door from 7 pm, and the film starts at 7.30 pm. We look forward to seeing you – and don't forget to look at our calendar on display around the village for details of our upcoming films.

Award-winning stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are just two of the ingredients that make up the hit black comedy film The Roses, the latest presentation from Sully Community Cinema. They are joined by a gun, a storm, a dream house, a beached whale, and much more, including co-stars such as Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Alison Janney (The West Wing), and Ncuti Gatwa (Doctor Who).

Coming to the Old School on South Road on Wednesday, February 11, The Roses (cert. 15) is a new adaptation of the book that was turned into the smash-hit 1989 satire The Wars of the Roses. It follows Theo and Ivy, a successful couple who find their happy marriage falling apart so badly that they start feuding and decide to make each other's lives unbearable. As events spiral out of control and their friends are caught up in the chaos, what will become of them and their dreams for the future?

Join us at the Old School for a film with dark comedy, mayhem, revenge, and great performances from two of Britain's best stars. Tickets at £5, which includes a free drink from our cash bar, will be available at the door from 7 pm, and the film starts at 7.30 pm. We look forward to seeing you, and keep an eye out for our calendar of forthcoming films.

Following another successful year packed with fresh movies and older classics, Sully Community Cinema is getting 2026 off to a great start with a new film that combines a cast of stars, a stunning location, and one of the most successful sagas of recent years.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (cert. PG) is the latest cinematic spin-off from the smash-hit TV series that enjoyed huge audiences and won a host of awards around the world. This third film, starring Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Penelope Wilton, Jim Carter, and many more Downton favourites, follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s and face scandal and a financial crisis. The previous two Downtown Abbey films proved a great success, and we are hoping for another bumper crowd to join us at Sully's Old School on South Road on Wednesday, January 14. Tickets at £5, which includes a free drink, will be available at the door from 7 pm, and all profits go to local good causes.
