In October 1885, only months after the formation of the association, Queen Victoria consented to be it's first patron.
We are proud that every monarch since then has become our patron.

Herbert Allen, brother of Miss Dorothy Allen, the secretary of the Beccles and Bungay Division of SSAFA, served in the 9th Seaforth Highlanders, was killed on 25 Sept 1915. His obituary read:
'Mrs Allen of Ingate House, London Road, notified of the
death of her youngest son, Capt. Herbert Allen, of 9th
Seaforth Highlanders, killed at the head of his Company
in the glorious British advance reported by General
French from headquarters in France. He was told to take
a number of men to cut a communication trench between
our own lines and the German lines, and in spite of a
very heavy fire, he led his party out in the most gallant
way, but way, but was shot through the chest and died
almost immediately'
