A Green Britain Foundation project tackling ghost gear and marine debris in UK waters and on UK Beaches.

Ghost net recovery, habitat protection, and ocean conservation. About Fish Net Zero
Fish Net Zero is a frontline marine conservation project working to remove abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) โ€” also known as ghost gear โ€” from UK coastal waters. We operate from Grimsby on the East Coast and the West Coast of Scotland, using trained volunteer divers

and crew to recover lost fishing gear that continues to trap, entangle, and kill marine wildlife. Our recovery efforts take place aboard our dedicated vessels Nemesis and Banshee, reaching remote sites often overlooked in mainstream conservation work. We are proudly part of the Green Britain Foundation, a charity focused on reducing climate impact and protecting ecosystems across the UK. In addition to ghost gear recovery, our work includes:

* Marine habitat monitoring and underwater research
* Support for seagrass and biodiversity restoration projects
* Education and outreach to raise awareness of marine pollution
* A growing network of organised beach cleans targeting coastal plastic waste and other debris

Our mission is simple: to protect marine life, preserve vital habitats, and support a cleaner, healthier ocean for future generations โ€” both beneath the surface and along the shore. Follow us for updates from our dives, beach cleans, and conservation campaigns. Get involved by volunteering, donating, or simply sharing our work.

What a beauty of a day for our beach clean on the Machars in Southwest Scotland. We tackled an area at Philip & Mary point near Port William. On the surface it didnโ€™t look bad but delving in amongst the tide line there was all sorts notably a huge amount of zip ties all in one patch. 8 people collected 52kg in one hour, no mean feat considering it was lots of small stuff.

As always we thank for the loan of the Litterpickers and for their ongoing support, for their generous sponsorship and to for the bin bags and rubbish collection and the members of public who show up all weathers ๐Ÿ™โœŠ

Two days on board MV Nemesis in Grimsby, and five crew are now sharper, safer, and ready to save marine wildlife.

After a long winter layโ€‘off, while works were completed to get Nemesis up to standard, we took the opportunity this weekend to get Nemesis back into the North Sea in proper rough conditions for sea trials and real-world drills.

Across the weekend, we trained Sarah, Louise, Rhys, Jack and Jonny, covering our full crew training syllabus plus Oxygen Administration and additional practical systems work, all delivered in line with our Safety Management System and supporting our MCA Work Boat Code (Edition 3) manning requirements.

This wasnโ€™t classroom theory. It was hands-on and built around the scenarios that matter:
โ— Man Over Board prevention and recovery practice
โ— Emergency fire drills
โ— Fire/systems shutโ€‘offs and critical safety procedures
โ— Emergency Steering Drills
โ— Deck operations and safe working routines
โ— Diver support readiness and first-response capability

Training was led by the vesselโ€™s Master, Muzzy, alongside one of our lead divers, Mark Powell. In addition to this internal training, all our crew are formally qualified in Sea Survival and Firefighting.

These are the weekends that build a crew everyone can trust and a vessel we can take to sea to save marine wildlife with confidence.

If you would like to join our volunteer crew, please drop us a DM.

Today our incredible volunteers at Fish Net Zero took action to protect our oceans

While this wasnโ€™t a case of abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear, our team responded to reports of submerged waste โ€” and what we found highlights just how serious marine pollution can be.

Our specially trained divers successfully lifted 12 tyres from the seabed.

They may look harmless, but over time tyres break down in saltwater, releasing microplastics and toxic chemicals such as zinc, lead, cadmium, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These substances can poison marine ecosystems, damage fish gills and organs, disrupt reproduction, and enter the food chain impacting both wildlife and human health.

We also recovered an old net pot that was still โ€œghost fishing,โ€ trapping marine life unnecessarily.

Thankfully, our team was able to safely release the animals caught inside. Ghost gear like this continues to harm wildlife long after itโ€™s lost, causing injury, starvation, and death.

Every item removed is a step toward a healthier ocean.

Our mission is simple: to create a safe, clean, and stable environment for all marine life from the smallest organisms to the largest species that depend on these waters.

Tyres and fishing gear end up in the ocean through illegal dumping, poor waste management, storm loss, and lack of awareness. Once there, they donโ€™t just disappear they become long-term hazards.

Healthy oceans mean:
โ€ข Cleaner water
โ€ข Thriving biodiversity
โ€ข Stronger coastal ecosystems
โ€ข A more sustainable future for everyone.

This is just one of many actions weโ€™re taking. Fish Net Zero has multiple diving campaigns planned across Scotland and England this year, and weโ€™re just getting started!

If you care about protecting marine life, now is the time to get involved.

Together, we can turn the tide.

๐—š๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ฌ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ต beach clean today, Sunday 26th April... 32KG of coastal debris collected. We had some special young superstars in our group!! Little ocean warriors! โœจ๏ธ
It's pretty standard, finding all the filled doggy-do bags during our beach clean-ups, these days, it seems like 'old news' to even mention ๐Ÿ’ฉ One of our helpers did pick up a nappy today, as well, though.
Midst all the usual tiny plastics, bits of polystyrene, old packets, drinks cans, glass bottles, va**ng paraphernalia, plastic lids, fishing line, bits of rope, wet-wipes, there were far toooo many cigarette butts, again. โ€”and ๐ฐ๐ก๐ฒ are we still finding so very many plastic drinking straws?? ๐Ÿน๐Ÿฅค (the picture of the straws shows only a portion of them). Our haul included 3 odd socks, a large towel, swimming goggles, a crocheted blanket, plastic beach toys, a shoe, The Grinch, hair bobbles, discarded cigarette lighters, AND ๐•“๐•–๐•’๐•”๐•™-๐•ฃ๐•–๐•’๐••๐•ช ๐”น๐•’๐•ฃ๐•“๐•š๐•– ๐Ÿ‘™
I feel that what's most infuriating, are the two separate 'sit spots' where folk had sat in a group and left their plastic cups with plastic straws, wedged upright on the sand. Whilst another group had upped and left each of their cider cans, where they'd been sitting, along with plastic bags ๐Ÿ™„

We're pretty used to all the doggy-do bags during our beach clean-ups. One person who joined us today, had 13 lots of bagged dog poo in their sack. (That's the least of our worries!)

Apologies for this, but you need to know how low it gets!!! (no picture included).
A second dump was found towards the end of our clean, one of our regular attendees told me she'd found something "really unpleasant".
โ€”"Someone has ๐Ÿ’ฉ in a bucket" ๐Ÿชฃ
Apart from this, Sunny Hunny was absolutely idyllic. Blue skies, happy four legged and two legged strolling, under the huge blue sky ๐Ÿ’™
Midst all the usual old packets, drinks cans, glass bottles, va**ng paraphernalia, tiny plastics, wet-wipes, there were far toooo many cigarette butts. We had a broken kite, socks, a t.shirt, a large towel, swimming goggles, copper pipe, plastic beach toys, shoes, hazard label, polystyrene, a balloon, a beer pipe cleaning fluid container, AND we noted the usual amount of fishing rope, line, and bits of nets. It was interesting to chat with Jon, (volunteering, today with the RNLI) identifying the different types of nets that rope had derived from.
