Last week, our team enjoyed a summer day trip, canoeing on the stunning River Wye from Kernel Bridge to Symonds Yat. We were fortunate with the weather and spotted an array of wildlife, including kingfishers, buzzards, herons, sand martins, swifts, swallows, goosanders, mandarin ducks with chicks, young grey wagtails and much more.

🌸 The orchids are in full bloom once again in our office garden.

This unassuming patch of grassland supports a remarkable diversity of wildflowers, including Pyramidal Orchid, a characteristic species of chalk grassland and the Common Spotted Orchid, which can be found thriving in habitats ranging from woodlands and grasslands to marshes.

It's always a nice surprise to see these vibrant flowers emerge at the start of June, providing a colourful reminder of the biodiversity that can flourish in these spaces.

Phase 1 ecology and planning validation

Once feasibility is established, Phase 1 ecological surveys provide the baseline evidence needed to assess ecological risk proportionately. Our surveys are designed to meet EcIA/BS 42020 standards and local authority validation checklists.

Typical Phase 1 work includes:
• Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA)
• Preliminary Roost Assessments (PRA) for bats (aligned with BS 8596:2015 and Bat Survey Guidelines 2023)
• Biodiversity Net Gain baseline assessments
• Ground Level Tree Assessments

Well-prepared Phase 1 reports help to:
• Clearly identify site constraints
• Trigger further surveys only where genuinely necessary
• Reduce requests for further information
• Inform clear, proportionate planning conditions

Our reports are written with planning officers in mind - concise, structured, and aligned with local authority expectations.

Restoring a historic avenue while protecting wildlife 🦇

We recently supported Bathurst Estate with ecological consultancy for the restoration of Broad Avenue at Cirencester Park, where over 100 declining horse chestnut trees were identified for replacement as part of a long-term landscape restoration project.

With 70 trees assessed as having the potential to support bat roosts, standard survey methods would have required more than 300 individual surveys. To overcome this challenge, our team designed a bespoke survey strategy, carrying out pre-dawn backtracking surveys over two years using bat detectors, thermal imaging and infrared cameras to identify key roost locations.

The surveys confirmed the presence of several bat roosts, including soprano pipistrelle and brown long-eared bats, enabling us to develop a targeted mitigation and licensing strategy.

The project successfully secured a Natural England protected species licence, allowing the restoration works to proceed in a legally compliant and ecologically sensitive way. Where possible, roost trees were retained, important habitat features were relocated, and more than 70 bat boxes were installed to enhance long-term biodiversity across the avenue.

A great example of how innovative ecological solutions can help deliver ambitious restoration projects while safeguarding protected species.

Bumblebees, puffins and pine marten could feature on future banknotes

Eighteen animals, birds and insects have been shortlisted to appear on future banknotes - and the public can have their say on which creatures feature.

Working with a panel of wildlife experts from across the UK, the Bank of England has produced a shortlist of animals that could become the central image on the £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes.

Eco-Check: Identifying Ecological Constraints Early

Many planning delays aren’t caused by complex ecological issues - they happen because ecology is identified too late.

Eco-Check is our early, pre-planning feasibility service, designed to highlight potential ecological constraints before surveys are commissioned or designs progress too far. The service is compatible with local authority validation requirements, BS 42020:2013, and early BNG assessment principles.

With Eco-Check, you can:
• Identify potential protected species or habitat constraints (such as bats, dormice, newts, and breeding birds)
• Determine necessary surveys and seasonal constraints
• Gain early insights into the implications of Biodiversity Net Gain
• Assist in making proportionate validation and scoping decisions

For planning departments, Eco-Check promotes earlier engagement with ecological considerations, significantly reducing the risk of inadequate ecological submissions later in the process. Gaining clarity early on leads to more streamlined applications and fewer Requests for Information (RFIs).

A few photos from last week’s bat survey at St Laurence’s Church in Stroud 🦇

Following a Preliminary Roost Assessment earlier this year, we’re now supporting the church with further bat surveys to help inform essential roof repairs to this historic building in the town centre.

It was great to see so much interest from members of the public during the survey, with plenty of questions about bats and their conservation. Hopefully we helped raise awareness of these protected species while gathering valuable survey data to support the project.

Otter Monitoring and Habitat Connectivity

We recently supported the Restore the Thaw Landscape Project, in partnership with Vale of Glamorgan Council, by delivering an otter monitoring programme across the River Thaw catchment.

Over two survey phases, we deployed wildlife cameras across 24 locations to better understand how otters are moving through the landscape, particularly around bridges, culverts and key crossing points. The survey aimed to identify how these features are being used and where improvements could support wildlife movement.

The project brought a range of practical challenges, from coordinating access across multiple private landholdings to managing equipment over consecutive six-week deployments, alongside adapting to occasional technical issues in the field. Careful planning and regular site visits were key to keeping the programme running smoothly.

Otter activity was recorded at eight sites, helping identify important movement corridors and areas where targeted improvements could make a real difference. The cameras also captured a variety of other species, including kingfisher, water rail, grey heron, fox and weasel, highlighting the wider ecological value of the river corridor.

The findings will help inform future habitat enhancement work across the Vale of Glamorgan, including practical measures to improve crossing opportunities beneath roads and reduce mortality risks for otters and other wildlife.

A brilliant project to support, contributing important baseline data that will help shape long-term conservation and landscape improvements across the area.

How early ecological insights can boost confident planning decisions 🌿

Ecology plays a central role in shaping planning decisions, and when effectively integrated, it ensures applications are robust, defensible, and easy to assess.

At Wildwood Ecology, we collaborate with planning teams across England and Wales, providing clear ecological guidance throughout the planning lifecycle - from initial feasibility to post-consent compliance.

Ecology rarely operates as an isolated step. It generally includes:

• Early identification of ecological constraints
• Proportionate surveys that guide decision-making
• Mitigation seamlessly integrated into plans
• Post-consent compliance and monitoring

Our aim is simple: to help ecological requirements be identified early, addressed appropriately, and clearly evidenced, supporting confident decisions that stand up through determination and appeal.
