Tomorrow night- a screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing.

The UK faces a growing climate and nature emergency. Yet most people have never been fully briefed on what it means for our lives, our economy and our future.

Last year, leading experts set out the evidence on the climate and nature crisis in a formal briefing to national decision-makers. A version of this has been made into a film, designed for screenings in communities. This new film from the National Emergency Briefing sets out the risks facing the nation - and the credible, positive responses available.

Come along to find out what is also happening locally, with time to reflect and mingle.

Tamzin Phillips’ Story of renewing her home and garden.

The latest 'Our Story' comes from Tamzin Phillips. Her home is well insulated in a way that keeps the family warm in winter and cool in summer, with the help of her fabric skills. Water that had been a hazard is now managed as a resource. In her garden she works with nature to provide an environment that is home to a diverse range of plants and creatures. She makes her own compost to use as a mulch to suppress weeds, which help trees and shrubs retain moisture. This helps them survive dry spells.

Nesta's 'visit a heat pump' scheme allows anyone in the UK to visit homeowners in their locality (or beyond) who will talk about their experience of getting a heat pump and using it, and answer your questions in plain English. No sales pitches.

All you need to do is find an event that works for you, and register for it.

Richard Erskine, our Education Lead, has held a number of such events and another one is happening this Saturday 23rd May, between 2pm and 3pm. Here's a link to register at this event:

https://app.visitaheatpump.com/hosts/115

You'll often hear it claimed you cannot heat an old building with a heat pump without lots of extra insulation, or without your heating bills increasing. Neither of these commonly held beliefs is true as you'll learn on this visit to this Grade 2 Listed, 200 year old property.

If you cannot make this event or it's fully booked, you can use the Nesta sight to express an interest in future events.

Visit a heat pump is a pilot service run by Nesta, the UK's innovation agency for social good. Nesta's sustainable future mission is working to accelerate the decarbonisation of household activities in the UK and improve levels of productivity. Our goal is that, by 2030, the UK will have reduced hou...

📚 Introducing the Many Hands Pop-Up !🖌️

The Many Hands Reading Room pop-up is now open at This House gallery on Market Street in Nailsworth until May 30th.

The pop-up is a space full of art and design books gathered from the local community for people to browse, and there are plenty of free or pay-as-you-feel creative sessions and after-school art drop-in sessions from Wednesday to Friday. It's an amazing collection - well worth grabbing a coffee and taking time out for a gentle browse.

NailsworthCAN is looking forward to collaborating with this exciting new venture with a creative session on 30th May where people can reuse and recycle various papers and fabrics, stitching them together into slim notebooks or sketchbooks. We can't wait to get creative with reuse and recycling - come and join us!

🏘️Nailsworth Annual Town Event🌍

A lovely sunny day at last Saturday's Nailsworth Annual Town Meeting to spread the word about Climate Action - with Richard, Maggie, Sally and Matt here at our market stall. We showcased our recent and forthcoming events and projects and signed up several new members who are interested in taking local action to tackle the climate emergency. There was also much discussion about decarbonising our energy supply, perhaps not surprising given the chaos on the world stage adding to the impetus to switch away from reliance on fossil fuels. Our street survey definitely showed overwhelming support for speeding up the energy transition and putting more solar panels on public buildings.

There was also quite a buzz at our 'sister' group Nature in Nailsworth on the neighbouring stall. People came to tell us about their wildlife sightings, have conversations about conservation and how to help local nature recovery, and plant up wildflower seeds in recycled pots to take away.

Altogether a great day for networking with community projects in and around Nailsworth.

Everything you wanted to know about heat pumps but were afraid to ask

Richard Erskine, Education Lead for NailsworthCAN, will be giving a third outing of his well received talk on heat pumps at 7.30pm on 28th April at the Parish Hall, Bussage (50 Geralds Way, Chalford, Stroud GL6 8FJ), hosted by ChalCAN (Chalford Climate Action Network). Richard says:

“I'm looking forward to giving my talk 'Everything you wanted to know about heat pumps but were afraid to ask' again. It was very well received at previous outings in Wotton-under-Edge and Nailsworth.

This talk is for everyone, and will cover questions people frequently ask. I like to use props to help explain things in digestible ‘plain English’ terms accessible to all.

It will demystify heat pumps and address many of the misconceptions about them. I cover their 200 year old history and why the Climate Change Committee sees them as crucial to a decarbonised energy future.

Entry free but please let us know if your coming by following the link below.”

🌱 Let's Grow It in Nailsworth🍅

🌻We're having a 'pay-as-you-feel' plant sale and seed swap on Saturday 9th May at the Arkell Centre in Nailsworth between 12 and 2pm. Donations of plants and seeds are welcome on the day, and there will be plenty from local growers too.

♻️If you're planning to clear out the clutter from your garden shed, please bring along any unwanted garden items to swap or donate to anyone who would like to re-use or re-purpose them.

👩‍🌾 It's also a chance to see how our new fruit and veg garden in the outdoor space is getting along. There might even be some lettuces ready by then!
