🌱 Planting for the Future 🌳

Nailsworth CAN is delighted to have been awarded funding under Stroud District Council's Climate and Nature grants to create community climate gardens in Nailsworth.

Come along to our first event on Saturday 17th October at Ringfield Close, off Park Road to find out more, and join our volunteers who will be planting for the future.

We will have some hand tools etc available but if you can come prepared that will be wonderful!

The space we will be planting currently has low biodiversity value and three mature trees that are unlikely to be resilient to the changing climate of prolonged hot spells and drought. We will be planting pollinator-friendly bulbs and wildflowers, and preparing the ground for three new trees to succeed the mature ones - you can help choose which ones from a range of climate resilient varieties.

🌍 Cotswold Youth Climate Action Network

We are sharing a message from CYCAN below - please spread the word if you know any young people who would be interested.

CYCAN is back this October — and we’re looking for young people aged 16–25 to get involved!

CYCAN offers practical, meaningful volunteering focused on the environment and sustainable living. It’s a great opportunity for young people to:

- Complete volunteering hours for their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
- Build work experience and CV skills
- Work towards the Young Environmental Leader Award
- Meet other young people and develop confidence, teamwork and leadership skills
- Get hands-on with activities such as tree planting, growing and harvesting, community projects, talks and events
There are monthly Wednesday meet-ups (with free pizza! ) plus weekend activities.
Please share the attached poster with your pupils, students, youth groups and colleagues — particularly anyone looking for volunteering, DofE or environmental opportunities.
First meeting: Wednesday 14 October, 5:15–6:15pm, Cattivo Pizza, Cirencester - Newcomers are welcome at any time.

🌿 HOME & COMMUNITY COMPOSTING 🪴

🌱Find out how to turn green waste into plant food at home or as a community scheme at our Home & Community Composting talk on Monday 2nd November 7pm at the Arkell Centre. It's free, no need to book, just turn up!

🪏Community Composting is a great way to create a virtuous cycle, turning unwanted garden greens from the local community into a peat free compost that is returned back to the community. It saves the cost and environmental impact of having to take trips to the tip and the garden centre and keeps all the benefits local.

👩‍🌾Have you ever wondered whether we could set up a community composting scheme for Nailsworth? Or do you need some tips on home composting? Come along to hear from local experts and practitioners about what’s involved.

🌿 Celebrating Bisley Community Composting 🥳

The NCAN Grow It group sourced compost for our Arkell Centre fruit and veg planters from Bisley Community Composting and all is growing very nicely 🤗 Why not pop along on the 14th to celebrate this great community asset and find out what it's all about?

🪴 Plastic Free Gardening 🌽

For week 3 of plastic free July we looked at avoiding plastic used in gardening. Aside from the impact from manufacturing plastic from fossil fuels, there are limited recycling options and the problem of contamination from microplastics in soil when plastic items degrade in the sun.
