Gates* looking very spruce since the Council repainted and trimmed them, path’s had a good tidy and new base, orchids in the grass, good views east and west, interesting things to see in the building. Come on down and visit!

What is this? What was it used for? The first question is easy, the second trickier (well to get exactly the right answer). Answer: this horn was used by the Ritchs, Simmary, to hail the trading boats in the bay (Longhope). They had a shop at Simmary, as did Jessie Ritch’s parents, Andrew and Barbara (née Gunn) Sinclair before her. Shop mentioned in 1871-1921 censuses.

Not an object we have but very grateful for the photo.

A boat to identify please. I'm sure folk here will know the right answer. (Edit) At the risk of being very wrong, could it be the Gleaner - Garden’s floating shop???

Looking for place, croft and house names. Ordnance Survey maps are great but they don't include all the names. Can you help with names of the places numbered 1-5 on this map?
And is Haybrake Cottage in the right place? It's the wooden house down by the shore, moved from Haybrake by Jimmy Wylie. Also looking for locations of Bruan and the Cubby, mentioned in various censuses etc. Other places we should be adding? A lot of change around Lyness.

We've got a map with a lot of Crockness and Rinnigill names in the exhibition at St John's. Might be able to get a paper copy of this Millbay map to you to write on the names.

We've got a grant from Voluntary Action Orkney for a very small oral history project and we'd like your ideas. Also, how to commemorate people buried at St John's but who have no gravestone? Come and discuss with us the 16th.

Two for the price of one. Here’s a photo that includes the grandmothers of two current St John's trustees! Who might they be?
The great-grandmother, father and two uncles of one of them are in the photo too.
Ideas on where the photo was taken??

Come in and visit St John’s. Open every day. Check: the Uncovering Crockness and Rinnigill exhibition in the porch; the family and local history materials in the vestry at the far end. Or just sit and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Agnes Tilloch (known as Tulloch here?) was island nurse from the mid 1940s to the mid 1950s and lodged at Mill Cottage, Melsetter, with the Guthries. Pictured here on the right with Mrs Margaret Guthrie.
Can you name other Walls nurses and the general dates they worked in the area?

Posting as it’s and one of our trustees is the current island nurse.
