IsWEPT Project Workshop: Exploring innovative approaches to decarbonising remote island energy systems 🌊️⚡

Aquatera was pleased to participate in the 2nd Workshop and subsequent technical site visit to Koh Tao as part of the Islanded Wave Powered Microgrid Pilot (IsWEPT), a project funded by Innovate UK under Energy Catalyst Round 10.

🌊 The IsWEPT project is exploring the use of wave energy converters to bring clean, affordable, reliable and sustainable energy to off-grid islands in Thailand. The project has brought together global expertise to progress and showcase the technology’s viability in Southeast Asia, and is laying the groundwork for adoption through development of sustainable business models which consider local context, needs and sensitivities.

Representing Aquatera, Marianne Eleanor Catanyag, Expert Consultant and Regional Manager for Southeast Asia, attended the workshop hosted by the Asian Institute of Technology.

The workshop brought together project partners including Toshiba Europe, Eco Wave Power, Queen Mary University of London, The University of Manchester, Leonics, Asian Institute of Technology, and Aquatera, alongside utilities and stakeholders, to explore how wave energy can support resilient, low-carbon island microgrids and advance pathways towards pilot deployment.

🏝️The Koh Tao site visit included engagement with The Provincial Electricity Authority, assessment of existing microgrid infrastructure, evaluation of potential wave energy deployment sites, and socio-cultural assessments to better understand local energy needs and opportunities for inclusive energy transition.

We are proud to contribute to the IsWEPT project and to work alongside international partners in exploring innovative approaches to decarbonising remote island energy systems while strengthening energy security and community resilience.

Day 2 of All Energy is in full swing!

We are joined again today by Spot the Robot Dog, a four-legged mobile robot dog built by Boston Dynamics and brought along to the event by our International Blue Economy Robotarium partners at the National Robotarium.

The International Blue Economy Robotarium is pioneering innovative technologies in remote sensing, drones, and underwater robots, to help monitor marine ecosystems, collect data, and identify areas vulnerable to our changing climate.

Alongside our partners at EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre, Heriot-Watt University Orkney, GreenMarine, Leask Marine Ltd, Orcades Marine Management Consultants Ltd and others, Aquatera are working with The National Robotarium to develop The International Blue Economy Robotarium - an Orkney-based centre for research, design, development and test of solutions to advance the Blue Economy.

Under the International Blue Economy Robotarium, we are leveraging the unique capabilities brought by our team to explore, develop and apply Robotics, AI and Data Management to facilitate safe and sustainable growth of the blue economy. Our mission is to ensure that the sector can flourish in ways that benefit all parts of society – and particularly in coastal and island communities.

As the blue economy grows, we will face increasing environmental challenges and more competition over resources and sea space. The Blue Economy Robotarium is exploring ways to address emerging issues by pioneering innovative technologies in remote sensing, drones, and underwater robots, to help monitor marine ecosystems, collect data, and identify areas vulnerable to our changing climate.

Unlocking Potential for Marine Energy: Aquatera at the Pan-American Marine Energy Conference 🌊⚡

Aquatera was pleased to support a two-hour interactive workshop on the environmental effects of marine energy for remote communities, held in Rio de Janeiro on the 10th of April, alongside the Pan-American Marine Energy Conference (PAMEC).

Sponsored by Ocean Energy Systems (OES) and led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Andrea Copping with contributions from OES-Environmental and Aquatera, the session brought together 50 engineers, industry representatives, students and researchers from ten countries across the Americas and Europe.

Participants explored two use cases — wave energy for a small coastal community in Mexico, and an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC)/Seawater Air Conditioning (SWAC) system for parts of Guam — before breaking into groups to discuss environmental considerations, regulatory pathways and the role of community engagement.

Aquatera Director Ian Hutchison supported Andrea in the delivery and facilitation of the workshop, which generated a strong shared message: community-first approaches and clearer regulatory frameworks will be essential to unlocking the potential of marine energy for remote and island communities.

OES-Environmental and Aquatera are conducting a short survey to collect information about the potential environmental effects of marine energy development in tropical and subtropical countries.

We are looking for information on

🔹active or planned marine energy projects in these regions

🔹research, monitoring, or modelling efforts;

🔹any relevant literature or other resources.

We are also looking for contacts and/or organisations with experience and interest in these areas.

☀️🌊 The Participation of Women in Renewable Energy (POWERE) project continues to pioneer evidence-informed action for energy transition! 🌊☀️

The POWERE team have recently written an article, published in Atlantis Press’ Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research series, on Renewable Energy and Social Infrastructure.

The publication examines the diverse social infrastructure that is emerging in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, where the project is piloting innovative Floating Photovoltaics (FPV). The project looks to establish a solar solution to empower women to become co-owners and managers of energy infrastructure, directly enhancing their socio-economic resilience.

The article, written in collaboration with project partners from the University of Manchester, Sussex University and Indonesia-based Universitas Gadjah Mada, discusses findings from ethnographic fieldwork at the project’s sites to form a picture of the influence of local culture, institutions, and collective practices on how renewables are understood, adopted, and adapted.

Preliminary findings underline the importance of place-based approaches for ensuring community-based renewable energy initiatives are inclusive, resilient, and bring social opportunities for the local communities in which they are situated. Social viability, alongside technical feasibility, is increasingly being acknowledged for its key role in long-term sustainable progress in energy transitions.

We hope that outcomes from the POWERE project’s research will inform future ventures into renewable initiatives and encourage socially-conscious energy development that benefit communities long-term.

Underwater Radiated Noise Toolkit Workshop in Trinidad and Tobago 🌊

We are delighted to share that we recently supported the delivery of another workshop to build capacity around GloNoise URN Toolkit in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago. The workshop was facilitated by Aquatera Senior Consultant Maria Apolónia and our partners blueOASIS, represented by Marcos Souza.

The GloNoise Partnership aims to address the impacts of Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) on marine life, and to support the implementation of the International Maritime Organization's Revised Guidelines for the Reduction of URN from Shipping to Address Adverse Impacts on Marine Life.

The GloNoise URN Toolkit allows countries to complete place-based assessments, utilising local data to ensure acoustic assessments reflect the conditions and keystone species in the region, rather than relying on broad international models.

Mirroring Trinidad and Tobago’s strategic multi-sector collaboration approach to addressing URN in the Caribbean, the workshop welcomed experts from across governmental institutions, academic, and the private sector. Trinidad and Tobago is pulling together expertise from across five strategic research clusters, including Shipping, Megafauna, Fisheries, Legal, and Costal ecosystems, to rapidly pioneer acoustic modelling in the Caribbean region.

The University of Trinidad and Tobago is working closely with these five ‘research clusters’ to ensure future generations of marine scientists are integrated into the workforce through a Sustainable Research Pipeline.

Moving forward, Trinidad and Tobago will look to enhance marine ecosystem protection through developing data-supported evidence-based policy – ensuring that the region’s blue economy can grow sustainably.

We are immensely grateful to our focal point contacts, Dr. Reia Guppy and Aimee Boisselle, for their coordination of the workshop.

A further thank you to everyone who attended the workshop, whose contributions and insights are key to the success of the event. We hope that the learnings from the event will accelerate Trinidad and Tobago’s ongoing efforts towards more sustainable stewardship of our oceans.
