Guide in a Hide is on tomorrow at The Loons from 10-1!

In February 2026 RSPB Scotland’s first large scale peatland restoration project was completed on Birsay Moors, Orkney!

🌄A total of 146 hectares of blanket bog on Orkney's hills were restored
🦉Hen Harriers, Short-eared Owls, and other birds of prey use the area to live and hunt
🪺We're hoping there will be more waders like Golden Plovers nesting now that there will be more food for them on the site!

This project is supported by the Scottish Government's Peatland ACTION Fund delivered in partnership with NatureScot and other agencies.

We have been receiving a high number of calls and messages from people finding dead seabirds 💔 We don’t have the skillset or facilities to deal with dead or injured birds. Details of what to do if you come across any are included in this post from Orkney Islands Council ⬇️

https://www.facebook.com/OICUpdates/posts/pfbid022h2NtWvto7NqPkn7fXbZZB6RBdzhZjvVZm8U9w7DMwbkSu9TyzZM9VdMSmZcMLjwl

We have recently received an increased number of reports of dead birds washing up on shorelines across Orkney. In many cases this is the result of seasonal storms weakening seabirds.

However, some birds may also be affected by Avian Influenza or other diseases that can pose a risk to people, or other animals. Members of the public are advised not to touch, handle, or move any dead birds.

You should report findings if you come across:
• One dead bird of prey, swan, goose, duck or gull or
• Five or more dead wild birds of any other species

Reports can be made via the UK Government’s report dead wild birds page, https://bit.ly/4ayfN3u or by calling 03459 33 55 77.

If you find a sick or injured wild bird, please contact the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) on 03000 999 999.

Further advice on Avian Influenza is available from the Scottish Government:

Further to this, if you come across dead birds that appear to be contaminated with oil, please do not touch or move them.

If the birds are alive, do not attempt to clean them yourself - this requires specialist equipment and expertise. Please report them to the SSPCA on 03000 999 999.

Dog walkers are asked to keep pets on leads near beaches and coastal paths where dead or sick birds may be present. This helps prevent dogs from picking up or coming into contact with potentially infected carcasses.

CAR PARK CLOSURE NOTICE- LISTENING WALL

Over the next couple weeks, we'll be doing path maintenance at the Listening Wall. The car park will likely be full of work vehicles for much of this time. Parking at the Loons Hide will be unaffected.

We'll be at the Loch of Ayre hide on Monday for some bird watching!

Due to the wind, this mornings Guide in a Hide will take place at the Loch of Ayre hide in St Mary's, rather than the Loons! We're not promising good weather, but at least our backs will be to the wind.
