Friends of the Ness of Brodgar

Friends of the Ness of Brodgar The site consists of a massive complex of well-preserved, monumental stone buildings on an unparalleled scale.

The Friends of the Ness of Brodgar support the archaeological excavation and research being conducted at the Ness of Brodgar Neolithic complex in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. This multi-award winning excavation lies at the heart of one of the richest archaeological landscapes in the world - the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site (WHS) - between the great stone circles of the Ring of Br

odgar and the Stones of Stenness, and in close proximity to Maeshowe, the finest Neolithic tomb in Northern Europe. This high profile excavation has featured regularly in the national and international media, including on PBS television’s Newshour; several BBC documentaries including an hour-long special and formed the centrepiece of an extensive article in National Geographic magazine. Education is a very important aspect of the Ness excavations. Not only do the excavations maintain a high academic profile but actively promote the involvement of all aspects of the community, locally, nationally and internationally. As well as welcoming volunteers and students from around the globe, the Ness plays host to a field-school for Willamette University in Oregon and an Excavation Club for 12-16 year old budding archaeologists. The site is open to the public throughout the excavation season with free guided tours. Worldwide access is also available through our website, www.nessofbrodgar.co.uk, which features a daily excavation diary during dig season.
