Stretham Community Garden

Stretham Community Garden A space set aside by Stretham Charity to be used as a communal garden area for residents. Evolving. If that's you we welcome you. Don't be alone.

The space is intended to help local residents have somewhere to come to help enhance their health and wellbeing, whether that be simply sitting and contemplating or helping create something pleasing to look at and enjoy. At time of writing on July 30th 2022 we don't have all the answers as to how this will all happen but know that there are people in the village prepared to help others who can and

will offer support, help, plants, ideas, skills for the benefit of all. For those that may be in a dark place do reach out. We'd love to find a way to get you involved. There will be something that you can help with. The plan is that 2022 will see us create a "blank canvas" with the space that was set aside for the garden. This translates to cutting down all the w**ds and grasses, fruit tree runners, blackberry runners etc. Then adding and levelling a large amount of topsoil. Having been ploughed we will then leave to settle for a month or so before rotivating the entire site and levelling by rake before grass seeding in September. This should give us something we can then mow. 2023 will then see the design evolve. We will need some financial help and at this time are considering various options as to what type or entity will be best for us. We thank everyone who has offered help. Right now can we say that we can't (and really would prefer not to) take cash donations. If you would like to help our next expense will be grass seed and we can point you at the product we would like to use. 2kg costs £18. Please reach out by WhatsApp or via Messenger.

Delighted ........... Would be a suitable word to describe the fantastic time that was had planting out the bulk of The Pumpkin Patch. We were joined by families and individuals who helped plant over 70 pumpkins.
There was an interesting face off between a retired professional gardener and a retired farmer. We will see who comes through.
The school gardening club are coming on the 11th at 3.50 if anyone still wants to join in. We have some seedlings still coming on. Bottom line is that the whole patch will be filled.
We do hope you will enjoy watching it come together and then come and get your pumpkin from us in return for a donation which will go to the PSA.

BIG DAY tomorrow (Saturday 30th).
We will be planting up The PUMPKIN PATCH.
10 o'clock kick off. It will be SO QUICK and ORGANISED that you will have time to plant a pumpkin or two and be UP THE CHURCH for 10.30 to take part in the "HAVE A GO BELL RINGING". Yes honestly.
For the naturally competitive amongst you feel bring to bring your own magic trowel, or your own seedling nurtured from day 1 in a permaculture environment and / or your own home made fertiliser to give it a good start.
For those thinking "I really want to do that but I haven't got a seedling so I can't go", be assured we have seedlings and you can have one based on the promise to water it and w**d it 😀.
So early to bed now.
See you at 10 sharp.
All ages welcome.

10am this Saturday. We will be planting up the Pumpkin Patch. If you have a seedling on the go then do bring it down. There is plenty of water nearby. We will mark each plot with your name so you can come and nurture it.
If you haven't got a seedling do not worry. We have spares. You can be part of creating a fun spectacle in the village. All we ask is you come and care for your pumpkin. Water/ w**ding.
We will be "weighing in" later in the year. There is talk of home made rosettes and of course "bragging rights".
We are raising funds for The PSA along the way so later we would love a donation.
Do bring a friend, neighbour, child, parent ..... you get the picture 😀.
We look forward to seeing you.
The school will be adding theirs the following Thursday. Then we wait.

BUT I'VE GOT NO PUMPKIN !
10am Saturday 30th May will see us planting up the Pumpkin Patch. Now it maybe that you might like to adopt a Pumpkin and feed it all the way to the grand weigh in.
If you would like to take part do just show up.
We are sure we have a Pumpkin you can adopt.
We are raising funds for the school PSA so ultimately we will be looking for donations for the pumpkins when we harvest them.
BUT there will be bragging rights for someone, at least, who has the largest Pumpkin.
So use ours or BYO 😀.

And ........ off they went. Niki and Robert headed up to the school with the goodie bags for the Gardening Club members to plant up their pumpkin seeds.
Word is the school were delighted to see them.

The patch has been rotivated thoroughly twice now and we are w**ding at each visit.
10am Saturday 30th May 2026 will see us planting up. If you would like to be part of the fun and are happy to commit to water YOUR pumpkin until it is harvested then do come along and we will make sure you have a seedling to plant on the day. (You can bring your own if you wish).
We would love to see you.

In other news the allotment site around The Community Garden has seen the arrival of a host of new tenants recently. Great to see families on the site learning and growing together. There are only a handful of plots available now but there are various sizes to suit new or experienced growers.

Exciting news.
Some of you will have noticed that there has been "activity" on the plot opposite the Community Garden alongside the road.
Am delighted to share several great bits of news.
1. The Stretham Charity Trustees have kindly enabled the Community Garden to expand onto the plot. Produce only this time. Some of you may remember we put a survey out and one piece of feedback was that some folk would like to see The Garden "produce" things.
2. We have approached the school and invited them to create a Pumpkin patch here. They were very excited and seemed to particularly like that the children could come up with mum and dad etc outside school to water their pumpkin (and anything else they might grow).
We do not have all the fine details but we are providing the seeds, plant pots, potting compost and plot markers.
The school will involve the members of their gardening club this year. Apparently it starts after these holidays. Open to all years.
In the space not used by the school, the Community Garden volunteers will fill the balance of the lot with pumpkins.
Our aim is that they will be available just before Halloween in return for a donation, which will go to The PSA.
We hope you will enjoy watching this colourful space evolving in the coming weeks and months.

Suns out ! Everything is a growing.
You may remember that we were kindly gifted some 30 shrubs by a very generous family in the village after they were taken up.
The great news is that virtually all of them have taken.
The periwinkle cuttings we nurtured are now exploding. Will provide great ground cover and help cut down on w**ding.
We transplanted some roses in 2023. They have looked touch and go ever since. Robert has continued to prune and care for them. They finally look like they are coming good this year.

Last year donated a few periwinkle cuttings. Robert and Niki potted them up and then planted them along the edge of the grass on the verge.
Tim found some "elephant ears" self seeded in the village and they put those in.
It would be easy to think they had all "gone" but this afternoon saw Tim and Robert confirming that they were "very much there". Another year and we will have a mass of foliage and lovely flowers along the strip. The plan is for them to cascade over the w**d matting too.
Have you seen the daffodils?
