Our Story
The LEAP Hands on Project is a Lanarkshire Befriending and Handyperson Service for over 50's. The Avondale project operates in Strathaven, Stonehouse, Glassford, Sandford, Gilmourton, Drumclog, Chapelton and Auldhouse. The wider Hands On Project was founded in 1992, and now covers Hamilton, Blantyre, Uddingtson, Bothwell, East Kilbride, Cambuslang and Rutherglen.
The Hands On Project aims to help reduce loneliness and isolation, to encourage independence and improve wellbeing, to help to keep people safer in their homes for longer, and to promote active community participation and empowerment.
Our Befriending service offers one-to-one home visits providing short and long term support and companionship to older people who may be isolated or lonely. It can also include reconnecting older people with their community and provides and supports volunteer-led befriending groups. Our Handyperson service provides practical assistance with minor jobs and tasks around the home.
The project is assisted by our fantastic, fully trained volunteers who graciously offer their time every week to make a real difference. The work they do allows older people to stay at home independently for as long as possible and to reduce their social isolation and loneliness.
