Potters was set up as market/training garden with the aim of improving the standard and quality of life for people with learning disabilities in Stranraer

Potters was founded in early 2012 when a group of local people identified an opportunity to promote community engagement as a third sector (not for profit) organisation to deliver a garden/training centre specifically for people with learning disabilities. Potters gained charitable status as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) (SC0444457) in November 2013. The project is manag

ed in 2 ways, via the Board of Trustees which has overall responsibility for he governance of the enterprise and operational management undertaken by appointed and paid staff. The site at Stair Park has been transformed into various working areas, a productive garden (fruit, veg & flowers), skills and learning area, workshop/arts & craft room & wildlife garden, Life Skills learning & Kitchen.

Hi, I'm Matthew and I have been coming to Potters for about 8 years. I like cutting the grass, art work woodwork and gardening. I have learned how to sow seeds and grow vegetables and flowers. I am learning life skills too. I enjoy going on day trips and I have made some good friends. I really enjoy listening to music, Jason and I always play some at lunchtime.
When I'm not at Potters I attend the ARC in Newton Stewart and I enjoy swimming and playing boccia. I also like making up quizzes with my Mum & Dad. My favourite football team is the Mighty Liverpool FC.

Hi my name is Logan and I have been at Potters for about 3 years. I enjoy doing woodwork, going on trips and working in the garden. Everyone at Potters is very friendly and we always have a good time. The staff are supportive and lots of fun. It's a great place to learn new things and have a good time.
My hobbies include outdoor/indoor bowling, football and swimming.

Hiya, I'm Liam 🙂
I love working hard at Potters with my friends. I like digging, weeding and woodwork in the workshop. I always make sure I wear my safety boots and gloves! When I'm not at Potters I go to the ARC, work at Dunns, and enjoy going to Papa Rab's on a Wednesday night and Friday group with Wigtownshire Stuff.

Meeting the Team (agaaaaiiin!) 🙄😁
Hi, I'm Kara and it has and continues to be an absolute privilege to work at Potters with the most amazing group of people. I have learned more in these last 10 years than i could ever teach. Every working day is a joy, filled with laughter, learning and pride as we are able to watch our students thrive. I am blessed to have a job I absolutely love. Outside of work my favourite thing in the world is spending time with our grandkids. Oh... and I am actually a mermaid 😉🧜‍♀️

Hello, My name is Jim. I have worked at Potters for 11 years, since it opened. I like doing the weeding, sowing seeds and growing vegetables. I really love doing the arts and crafts and showing people around the gardens and other work spaces. I like working with all the staff and students. I am very good at deadheading the roses and weeding. This year I learned how to do watercolour painting. I have painted pictures and made watercolour painted cards too. I also love making art with sea glass. I like making things in the kitchen too, like jams and learning how to do the washing.
Today I learned how to make a pumpkin on a knitting machine!

Hi my name is Jason. I have been at Potters for 7 years. I enjoy everything we do and we do it all as a team. I have enjoyed making new friends and having a good laugh while we work. I have learned lots of gardening, woodwork, cleaning, art work, cooking and lots more! My favourite thing is working outside and sharing my knowledge. Hi, my name is Denys Potter-Smith. I am the manager at Potters. My work at Potters, began in 2013. I was part of a steering group that devised the idea of Potters. I became manager in January 2015. Potters has changed over the past years, but fast forward to 2026 and we now have more activities than ever before, providing greater choice, leading to more creativity. I have enjoyed every minute of everyday, each day brings something new and surprising. Potters now employs four staff, each brining something new to the growth of Potters. What can I say about our students; well, everyone is unique; similar but very individual and diverse, with a tremendous sense of humour. They have an eagerness to learn, adapt and progress in a way unique to themselves. They are a joy to work with. Our students make Potters what it is. It is because of them Potters is what we have become. I'm passionate about my work, the work of staff, students and trustees all working together towards a single aspiration. I look forward to creating an even more diverse and distinctive venture together; we are a team.

Continuing our 'Meet the Team' and intoducing Colin 😁
I started my journey at Potters as a Trustee in June 2022, becoming Chair a few years ago. It is very rewarding sharing my 60 years of life experience supporting and guiding a community organisation to grow and bloom. This is what Potters does best. To take Students into an environment that fosters a safe space for them that provides opportunities to grow and blossom; they do that with vigour.
Earlier in the summer I spent an entire week working with and alongside everyone; it was so much fun. I am certain I got more out of it than the knowledge I was able to pass on. There is always laughter amongst the learning. What is so special is to see how everyone cares for and supports each other. Potters is a family.
Also, the cakes are to die for!! The baking skills of Students put my Mrs's to shame!! Even some of the local WRI Ladies were impressed, so that says something!!
Long may Potters continue to grow, bloom and propagate in our communities.
