Strachur Smiddy Museum & Craft Shop

Strachur Smiddy Museum & Craft Shop 'If walls could talk...' that's often what I think when I am in the smiddy. 200+ years of local life and history.

Step back in time as you enter the 18th-century blacksmith’s Smiddy and see the local blacksmith work in the traditional way with forge, bellows and anvil, surrounded by cobbled floor, tools of the trade and beamed ceiling. It was the working place, the meeting place and where the children looked- in as they walked up the clachan brae on their way to school. The blacksmith, the saddler, the joiner

, the mason et al and amongst them all, the blacksmith is 'the king of the trades'. He made all the tools. 'By your hammer and hand all crafts do stand'. And that is why the smiddy has a B Listing: the tools' collection....which is of particular interest to metallurgists as the tools are pre-nuclear. The smiddy is still a working smiddy, little changed. Most weekends, local man John Bain, works the forge and he likes nothing better than to share his knowledge and experience of the trade with visitors. It's mostly pokers he makes which are for sale in the craft shop, which has a fine collection of other local craft.
