Hebridean Connections

Hebridean Connections Hebridean Connections is both an innovative website and a network of voluntary groups working to preserve the cultural heritage of the Outer Hebrides.

Hebridean Connections is about:

Bringing people together around a common interest in the history and culture of the Outer Hebrides. Taking advantage of this interest as a basis for promoting digital inclusion. Using technology to preserve information about local history, families and traditions. Strengthening local communities through the encouragement of volunteeering. The project, which ran fro

m 2013 to 2015 and followed on from an earlier initiative the same name, was a partnership involving ten local history societies (comainn eachdraidh). It was financed by the Scottish Government’s People and Communities Fund (PCF), Highland and Islands Enterprise (HIE), and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES). A one-year extension to 2016 is being supported by: PCF; the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF); CnES; and the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO). The project is managed by the Islands Book Trust on behalf of the comainn eachdraidh.

Thank you so much for this post. Comann Eachdraidh Sgìre a’ Bhac and Comann Eachdraidh an Rubha have recently joined and will be adding many new records to what is already a huge resource visited daily by people all over the world. Thanks for being one of our founder members,

It has come to our notice that many of you may not know about the wonderful website Hebridean Connections, nor our involvement with it. Here is a short introduction for you and we hope that if you have not visited this website then this may encourage you to do so.
If once you have looked at the site and feel that there is information that is incorrect or missing from our entries please let us know at [email protected].
If for other members items you can contact Hebridean Connections direct via the website.

Over twenty years ago the Hebridean Connections website was set up to provide thousands of records relating to the genealogy, history, traditions, culture and archaeology of the Outer Hebrides. The material was drawn mostly from the archives of local historical societies (Comann Eachdraidh) and other member organisations, with valuable input from Hebrideans and their descendants around the world. Today, information is being contributed by sixteen organisations from the north of Lewis to Benbecula.

Comann Eachdraidh Sgìre Bhearnaraidh (Bernera Historical Society) is one of the four founder member of Hebridean Connections and has contributed all our genealogical and crofting records to this website. Recently our volunteers have been checking all our records and updating them as required. This is an on-going process as new information is provided to the Comann Eachdraidh and additional persons, places and items of cultural and historical interest are added to the database.

Over the years the website has been upgraded, it is presently using new software and is inchoative and easy to use. It is only limited by the information that is available to the member organisations.

Today Hebridean Connections is operated solely by volunteers in each member organisation, and centrally, who give a lot of their time ensure that the best information is available for all to see.

Due to regulations Hebridean Connections can only publish information of people who are no longer with us. Those looking for living relatives will not find then here, sorry.

Tha fios againn air cuid de na boireannaich anns an dealbh-sa, ach càite a bheil iad? Ma tha fiosrachadh sam bith agaibh leigibh fios dhuinn!

We know the names of most of these women, but where were they and what was the story behind the photo? We'd love to hear any additional information you might have!
