A recent feature in The Telegraph highlighted the realities of fuel poverty in the Western Isles, particularly the challenges faced by off-grid island communities as global oil prices continue to rise following conflict in the Middle East.

The article matches the experience long highlighted through research and frontline experience from TIG, including the higher costs faced by households that rely on heating oil and electric heating, the impact of older and harder-to-insulate housing stock, and the additional costs associated with remote island living.

The piece also discusses the lack of protection for households using heating oil, which is not covered by the energy price cap, leaving many exposed to sudden price increases.

Kirsty MacLeod, Energy Advice Manager at TIG, said “The ongoing uncertainty around oil pricing is causing real anxiety and distress for households, with many deeply worried about how they will afford to heat their homes. People are being forced into urgent decisions, often ordering heating oil at short notice as prices fluctuate daily, leaving them exposed to sudden cost spikes and increasing financial pressure.”

The article reinforces our strongly held belief that there is an urgent need for long-term solutions that properly reflect the realities of living in island and rural communities. TIG will continue to campaign and work for effective solutions.

If you are worried about heating costs or struggling with fuel bills, support and advice are available through the TIG team.

RTS meters rely on a radio signal that is now being permanently switched off.

Switch-offs started last month and will continue until the end of June.

Once that signal goes, these meters stop working properly. This means your heating and hot water could stop, switch off and on at the wrong times, or become harder to control.

There are still hundreds of homes locally that may not realise this affects them. Check your electricity meter now and check in on anyone you think might need help.

Complete this form now for help, or help someone vulnerable complete it.

Permanent RTS switch-offs are continuing until the end of June in phased shutdowns.

From April, meters across the Western Isles begin going offline.

Estimates suggest 700 households are still using these meters!!

If they’re not replaced in time, people could lose control of their heating and hot water without warning.

We need to find these households now. Time is running out.

Check your meter. Check on neighbours. Don’t assume someone else has told them.

Complete this form now for help, or help someone vulnerable complete it.
