A recent feature in The Telegraph highlighted the realities of fuel poverty in the Western Isles, particularly the challenges faced by off-grid island communities as global oil prices continue to rise following conflict in the Middle East.

The article matches the experience long highlighted through research and frontline experience from TIG, including the higher costs faced by households that rely on heating oil and electric heating, the impact of older and harder-to-insulate housing stock, and the additional costs associated with remote island living.
The piece also discusses the lack of protection for households using heating oil, which is not covered by the energy price cap, leaving many exposed to sudden price increases.
Kirsty MacLeod, Energy Advice Manager at TIG, said “The ongoing uncertainty around oil pricing is causing real anxiety and distress for households, with many deeply worried about how they will afford to heat their homes. People are being forced into urgent decisions, often ordering heating oil at short notice as prices fluctuate daily, leaving them exposed to sudden cost spikes and increasing financial pressure.”
The article reinforces our strongly held belief that there is an urgent need for long-term solutions that properly reflect the realities of living in island and rural communities. TIG will continue to campaign and work for effective solutions.
