What fantastic community spirit there was on Saturday for the Autoparts Stornoway Half Marathon! ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

In the morning, we provided first aid cover for all the running events, helped marshal several road crossings, and even had the honour of handing out medals to the winners. Well done to everyone who took part! ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

That evening, the The Caladh Inn kindly donated the Garry Room for us to host a fantastic ceilidh. Cree Mackenzie and friends had everyone dancing from the very first tune, and the dance floor was packed all night. ๐ŸŽป๐Ÿ•บ

A big thank you to from Lewisdronescapes & Colin O'Callaghan Photography for capturing some brilliant photos from the day, and massive thanks to all the local businesses who generously donated amazing raffle prizes.

Massive congratulations to our team member Michael, who successfully completed a cycle from Glasgow to Stornoway.
Michael took on this incredible challenge to raise money for the Western Isles Cancer Care Initiative โ€” a charity very close to his heart.
He set off last Saturday from Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and seven days later arrived off the ferry in Stornoway, where members of the team cheered him on for the final miles before he reached the finish line at his home in the village of Back.

Over the course of the journey, Michael cycled an impressive 285 miles unassisted, tackling partially off-road terrain and an incredible 27,500ft of elevation.
Well done, Michael โ€” the whole team is proud of your amazing effort.

Thereโ€™s still time to donate using the link below.

January saw the Hebrides MR Team head out on the hill for night navigation training.

Setting off at dusk, we worked in teams to practice navigating through varied terrain under cover of darkness.

A range of techniques can be combined and relied upon for wayfinding in the dark, or in low visibilty like mist. For example compass bearings, pace timings and handrailing features in the landscape, such as rivers.

As part of the training exercise we located a simulated casualty with multiple lower leg injuries. This required us to perform a primary survey, followed by splinting and packaging for extraction utilising pain relief in the form of Penthrox.

The evening provided excellent training experience and we can confirm the casualty has made a rapid and full recovery!

Itโ€™s great to see proper snow back on our hills โ„๏ธ Some of our team members have been out enjoying the winter conditions over the weekend.

If youโ€™re planning to head out in these conditions, please make sure youโ€™re well prepared, carrying the right equipment and knowing how to use it. Winter terrain can change quickly and demands extra care.

If you do need our assistance, call 999 and ask for Police, then Mountain Rescue. Our team has a range of winter skills, including rigging, avalanche training, and 4x4 response capabilities.
Stay safe and enjoy the winter hills.

Today we celebrate International Volunteers Day and want to recognise all the hours our members put into keeping HebMRT available 24/7. Whether out on a search, completing training or performing equipment checks the team requires a lot of voluntary work to keep running. Last week was a busy and rewarding one for the team!

๐ŸŽ„ 25/11 โ€” Christmas Lights Switch-On:
We were proud to lead one of the parades at the Stornoway Christmas lights switch-on, escorting the procession from the outskirts of town into the centre for the celebrations.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ 27/11 โ€” AGM:
Our annual AGM was well attended. We extend a heartfelt thank-you to JK for her dedication as Medical Officer as she steps down, and we give a warm welcome to Ben, who now steps into the role.

๐Ÿง—โ€โ™‚๏ธ 29/11 โ€” Training Day:
Saturdayโ€™s monthly training focused on night rigging. After an afternoon of classroom learning and kit familiarisation, we headed to a nearby cliff to put our skills to the test. It was brilliant to welcome several of our new trainees to their first training session.
