Incredible news in the headlines today. A new trial pill has shown it could almost double survival times for pancreatic cancer patients, with fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy. It’s early days for the drug called daraxonrasib, which has been trialled with patients in North America, Europe, and Asia, but the results represent a huge leap forward for pancreatic cancer care and targeted treatments. We hope that one day it could mean that patients can be more comfortable and spend more time with their loved ones.

The drug, daraxonrasib, has been hailed as a breakthrough in managing the deadliest of all the major cancers.

Earlier this year, we announced something we'd been working towards for a long time… the UK's first pilot to provide cancer care to children on a mobile unit. Made possible through collaboration with the North West Children's Cancer Operational Delivery Network, along with regional cancer alliances and NHS trusts in the North West. The pilot has seen children treated on board and families seeing first-hand what a difference it makes.

Recently, the mobile unit had another visitor. Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, stepped on board, and when asked what he thought, he said: "It just makes so much sense. This is how it should be."

Andy also spoke about how this community-based cancer care model aligns with the NHS 10-Year Cancer Plan, and why he believes it is exactly the kind of approach needed to help meet its aims. As the charity that has been pioneering cancer care in communities on mobile units since 2007, working in partnership with NHS trusts across the country, we couldn't agree more.

We’re delighted to introduce the newest member of the team, Alan!

With his journey beginning at last November’s Gingerbread Gala, Alan has taken up his post on our Children's mobile unit pilot alongside driver Dave, who has confidently (albeit somewhat optimistically) appointed him as co-driver.

Since joining the pilot, Alan has become a popular figure amongst the staff. And he's a friendly, familiar face for the children receiving their cancer care on board.

Alan will be travelling on the mobile unit across the North West with the team as they continue to provide vital, accessible cancer care closer to home for children and young people.

Stay tuned as we follow Alan’s journey, showing that even the smallest companions can make a big difference. Where will Alan go next?

We'd also like to thank Alan Ible, who named 'Alan', thanks to a generous bid in an auction to support the charity. Thank you, Alan. You've given our little mascot not just a name, but the start of his story, and he will go on to bring comfort and reassurance to children while they're on the mobile unit.

A cancer diagnosis for children changes everything. Beyond the way it makes them feel, there are the hours lost from school, play and daily life, and the exhaustion that accompanies it all. The last thing a family needs is hours spent on the road just to get to treatment.

Nicole, one of the nurses on board our mobile unit, speaks about what the pilot means in practice for families and the children she cares for - reduced travel times, shorter waits, being home in time for siblings returning from school and children who are spending more time in school themselves. Plus, reduced financial pressure. It all makes a difference.

Thanks to this mobile unit, children and young people in the North West are now receiving cancer care in their own communities and for families affected by childhood cancer, every saved journey matters.

Seeing this pilot progress and hearing the feedback from families has been incredibly rewarding. We are proud to work alongside our partners on this pilot project to make it a reality.

We’re delighted to share that Jonathan Swain, senior news correspondent for ITV and a familiar face on Good Morning Britain, has joined Hope for Tomorrow as our newest ambassador.

Jonathan first crossed paths with our team while covering our work and its relation to the National Cancer Plan for Good Morning Britain back in February. He keenly stepped on board a mobile cancer care unit to see what they were all about, and since that visit, Jonathan has decided to extend his support and become an ambassador for the charity.

We’re thrilled to have Jonathan join us, and can’t wait to see what’s in store as he helps us raise awareness and shares his knowledge and expertise.

Welcome, Jonathan! We’re so pleased to have you.

Amazing news! We have been working on a very exciting pilot project – the UK’s first mobile cancer care unit for children, and are now pleased to say that it is officially providing cancer care to children and young people in their communities.

The pilot mobile unit is currently being hosted by fantastic local venues, including garden centres and football grounds. As you can see here, the mobile unit was at Accrington Stanley Football Club recently, one of many community sites where children can now access cancer care closer to home in the North West.

This means that families who would otherwise face journeys of significant distance can now access cancer care somewhere much closer, rather than spending hours travelling to treatment, which is often compounded by extra time spent searching for parking and long walks through hospital corridors. Now, their journeys are shorter, and they’re welcomed on board the mobile unit, where everything needed to make treatment as comfortable and easy as possible is available.

Thanks to our partners who are working together to make this possible - the North West Children's Cancer Operational Delivery Network, Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance, with Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust.
