We were absolutely delighted to receive a very generous donation from the family of Ellie McLeod following Ellie’s funeral. Ellie’s granddaughter, daughter, and befriender joined us at our office for a cuppa, a catch up, and a chance to reminisce about the many lovely outings Ellie and her befriender, Alison, enjoyed together.
Ellie was referred to us by her family in early 2023. She had been feeling lonely and low after losing her husband in 2019 and then her sister in law in 2021, along with the sadness of seeing her circle of friends grow smaller. Though Ellie lived with osteoporosis and dementia, she never let that stop her from getting out for a walk—especially when she had company.

While her family visited often, Ellie felt she would benefit from a friend outside the family, and she was delighted to meet Alison. Together, the two of them enjoyed trips to local beauty spots, always finishing with a cuppa, a chat, and a fine piece. As Ellie’s granddaughter shared, "We will always be so grateful to Alison for the love and friendship she gave Grandma, and for the support she provided to us as a family. Grandma loved her outings with Alison, and we always enjoyed seeing the photos and knowing she was getting out and about.

Even as Grandma’s Alzheimer’s progressed, Alison showed up without fail, becoming a constant and reassuring presence in Grandma’s life. We will always be thankful for everything she did, she really is worth her weight in gold!'

A heartfelt thank you to Ellie’s family for their generous donation—we appreciate it so very much.

If you’d like to volunteer and can spare an hour or two once a week or once a fortnight, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch at [email protected].
