💙 What a weekend! 💙

Over the weekend, and for the next 9 days straight, we’re welcoming families and professionals for back-to-back visits, giving them a sneak peek inside Oakley and a chance to see everything taking shape.

There were smiles on the faces of every child and young person who came through our doors, and if we’re being honest… there were plenty of tears too. But these were happy tears from the grown-ups, watching their children explore the space and sharing in their excitement! 🥹

For us, seeing families explore the space, imagine future opportunities, and share in the excitement of what’s to come has reminded us exactly why this project matters so much.

As we put the final pieces into place at Oakley, I'll be honest...

I'm tired.

The last few weeks have been a blur of decisions, challenges, delays, problem-solving and long days. Every time I think I've reached the end of the list, another job appears.

And people keep asking me, "Why?"

Why keep pushing? Why take this on? Why does it matter so much?

The answer has never changed.

Because of my child. For every child who follows.

Oakley exists because of my child.

Because I know what it feels like to watch your child struggle in spaces that were never designed with them in mind. To see them carrying burdens they should never have had to carry.

The part that still catches my throat is knowing that Oakley came too late for my child.

I can't go back and give them the environment they deserved.

I can't change what they experienced.

But I can make sure that what they went through wasn't for nothing.

I can help create something better for the children who come next. A place where they feel safe, understood and accepted from the moment they walk through the door.

This has been four years of my life. Four years of learning, fighting, fundraising, building and believing in something that didn't exist yet. There is no pay cheque at the end of this. No financial reward for the sleepless nights, missed weekends and sacrifices.

Just a belief that children deserve better.

So when the days are long and the challenges keep coming, I come back to the reason.

Because of my child. For every child who follows.

And that will always be enough to keep going.

She’ll wake up on her 16th birthday and for her, it’ll feel like any other day.

No little surprises, no excitement building and no feeling that today is something special.

But she’s like so many girls her age. She loves a pair of fake eyelashes that give a little boost of confidence. She loves trips to Starbucks, even if she doesn’t get anything. She loves baking and dreams of making the most delicious biscoff cake.

Turning 16 should be exciting and it should feel like a milestone that is worth being celebrated. But for some young people, birthdays pass by without much notice.

We believe every young person deserves to feel celebrated. With your support, we can help make her 16th birthday look different. A gift to open, a reason to smile and one less thing for a family to worry about.

Today in the wonderful world of Oakley... 🌳

We got VERY, VERY lost!! 😅

We bought a tree... and a few other green bits, had a whopping 900m² of turf delivered and laid (mostly!), met a very laid back dog called Mildred and...

THE FLOOR GOT BUFFED!!!! 🙌✨

It's been a long, busy, slightly chaotic day, but seeing everything starting to come together makes it all worthwhile. One step closer to turning the dream into reality!

Now we're off to admire the buffed floor
and stare at the turf!!

It's been all go recently – 7 days a week and from daylight until we fall asleep!

There's been a lot of hard graft, gardening(sinking), painting, cleaning, moving furniture and generally getting everything ready. But it's not all work!

Today, Adedoyin took over the kitchen, she did a test run of the oven and hob and treated us to some delicious Nigerian puff-puff and homemade meat and potato pies. They went down an absolute storm!

Our wonderful trustee Zia also treated everyone to burgers for a BBQ lunch. A few of us attempted to man the BBQ... then Adedoyin stepped in to help rescue the operation! 🍔 She has now been promoted to head chef!

A huge thank you to all the staff who were in today, and an extra special thank you to those who were off today but turned up anyway. As a charity, we simply couldn't do this without people willing to muck in, help out, and turn their hand to whatever needs done.

A special shout-out to the young people from Mearns Academy who turned up, got stuck in, and somehow managed to get covered head to toe in paint in the process! 🎨😆

We're tired, but we're getting there, and days like today remind us how lucky we are to have such an amazing team and community around us.

Employee of the Week: Kate

We spent all day yesterday looking for the playframe bolts and were genuinely considering getting new ones sent from Germany.

Kate arrives this morning and says:
"Are they in this box labelled 'Playframe'?"
They were!!

In hindsight, "check the box labelled Playframe" was a stronger strategy than "panic for 24 hours." 😂👏

Congratulations to Kate for solving in 10 seconds what the rest of us couldn't solve in an entire day.

Yellow lorries, blue skies, and a mountain of boxes that ended up staying put far longer than anyone expected...

As Oakley gets ready to open its doors THIS MONTH, we wanted to say a huge thank you to the team at Economove.

What was meant to be a short-term storage solution somehow turned into a much longer arrangement, but these guys were patient, helpful, enthusiastic and unfailingly good-humoured.

Opening a new centre like this comes with plenty of surprises and moving deadlines, but knowing our things were safe and in good hands took a huge weight off our minds.

Thank you for storing our stuff WAY longer than we agreed, for putting up with our ever-changing plans, and for helping us get Oakley to the finish line.

We'll be raising a glass to you when we open THIS MONTH.

🎉 THREE MORE SLEEPS! 🎉

In just 3 more sleeps, we'll finally be able to say...WE OPEN THIS MONTH!

The building is looking amazing, the excitement is building, and the list of last-minute jobs is multiplying faster than we can cross things off.

So we're putting out one final plea to our lovely community...

As a charity, we'd much rather spend our pennies supporting children and young people than buying staplers, watering cans and gravel.

If you have any of the items on our wish list lurking in a shed, garage, loft or spare room we'd love to give them a new home at Oakley.
